📚 IGCSE CCEA Psychology: Unit Test Mock Paper Walkthrough | IGCSE CCEA

This walkthrough takes you through a full CCEA-style IGCSE Psychology unit test mock paper, question by question. Each section gives the question, model answer, explanation of the mark scheme, and common mistakes so you can turn knowledge into marks.

1. How to Use This Mock Paper |

Before you start, download or print the mock paper and attempt it under timed conditions. Give yourself about 45 minutes for a single unit test, then use the model answers in this walkthrough to mark your work.

The mark totals next to each question show how much detail is expected. For example, a 2-mark question usually needs two accurate points, while a 6-mark question requires knowledge, application, and some evaluation or elaboration.

Use the common mistakes section as a checklist after marking. If you lost marks because you defined a term vaguely or forgot to link evidence back to the question, write that correction beside the question so the pattern becomes visible.

2. Question 1: Independent and Dependent Variables |

Question: A psychologist investigates whether caffeine affects reaction time. Participants drink either regular coffee or decaffeinated coffee. Identify the independent variable and the dependent variable. [2 marks]

Model answer: The independent variable is the type of coffee, specifically whether it contains caffeine or is decaffeinated. The dependent variable is reaction time, which should be measured in milliseconds or seconds.

Explanation: The independent variable is the factor the researcher manipulates or changes. The dependent variable is the factor that is measured to see if it has been affected by the independent variable.

Common error: Many students write ‘caffeine’ and ‘reaction time’ but miss the precision needed for the first mark. The IV must be expressed as the two conditions, such as ‘caffeinated coffee vs decaffeinated coffee’, not just the word ‘caffeine’.

3. Question 2: Memory – Multi-Store Model |

Question: Explain one strength of the multi-store model of memory. [3 marks]

Model answer: One strength is that the model is supported by the serial position effect. Glanzer and Cunitz found that when participants recalled a list of words, they remembered more words from the beginning and end of the list than from the middle.

This supports the model because the primacy effect suggests early words are rehearsed and transferred to long-term memory, while the recency effect suggests the last words are still in short-term memory. Therefore, the evidence supports the existence of separate short-term and long-term stores.

Common error: Students often state the study but do not explain how it supports the model. To gain the third mark, you must link the primacy and recency effects directly to the separate stores.

4. Question 3: Development – Piaget’s Conservation |

Question: Define conservation and give one example of a conservation task. [2 marks]

Model answer: Conservation is the understanding that the quantity of a substance remains the same even when its appearance or arrangement changes. For example, a child understands that the amount of liquid stays the same when poured from a tall, thin beaker into a short, wide beaker.

Explanation: Piaget found that children in the pre-operational stage, usually below about 7 years of age, cannot conserve because they focus on one dimension, such as height, rather than considering height and width together.

A child in the concrete operational stage can decentre and reverse the action mentally, so they understand conservation. This shows a shift from perception-based thinking to logical operations.

5. Question 4: Social Influence – Asch’s Conformity Study |

Question: Outline Asch’s line judgement study and state one factor that affects conformity. [4 marks]

Model answer: Asch asked male participants to judge which of three comparison lines matched a standard line. In a group, confederates deliberately gave the same wrong answer on critical trials. Asch found that participants conformed to the incorrect majority on about 37% of critical trials, and around 75% of participants conformed at least once.

One factor that affects conformity is group size. Asch found that conformity increased when the majority had about three members, but larger majorities did not increase conformity much further.

Other acceptable factors include unanimity and task difficulty. If one confederate gives the correct answer, conformity drops sharply because social support reduces the pressure to agree with the majority.

6. Question 5: Biological Psychology – Neurons and Synapses |

Question: Describe how a message travels across a synapse. [4 marks]

Model answer: An action potential travels down the presynaptic neuron to the axon terminal. This causes vesicles to release neurotransmitters into the synaptic gap. The neurotransmitters diffuse across the gap and bind to receptor sites on the postsynaptic neuron. This triggers a new action potential if the threshold is reached.

After transmission, neurotransmitters are removed from the receptor sites by reuptake or broken down by enzymes. This stops continuous stimulation and allows the synapse to return to its resting state.

Common error: Students often write that the electrical signal ‘jumps’ across the gap. In fact, transmission across the synapse is chemical, while transmission along the neuron is electrical. Distinguishing these two stages is essential for full marks.

7. Question 6: Research Methods – Experimental Design |

Question: A researcher matches participants on IQ before allocating them to either a memory training group or a control group. Identify the experimental design and state one strength.[3 marks]

Model answer: This is a matched pairs design. One strength is that participant variables, such as intelligence, are more controlled, so individual differences are less likely to confound the results.

A further strength is that each participant only takes part in one condition, so order effects such as practice or fatigue are avoided. This is different from repeated measures designs, where the same participants complete all conditions.

Common error: Students confuse matched pairs with independent groups. The key detail is that participants are paired on a relevant characteristic before being split, so the design is not completely independent at the allocation stage.

8. Question 7: Psychological Problems – Phobias and Systematic Desensitisation |

Question: Describe two symptoms of a phobia and explain how systematic desensitisation could be used to treat it. [6 marks]

Model answer: Two symptoms of a phobia are persistent, excessive fear of a specific object or situation, and avoidance of the feared stimulus, which can seriously disrupt normal daily life. Physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, or panic attacks may also occur.

Systematic desensitisation begins with the patient learning relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation. The therapist and patient then construct a fear hierarchy, starting with a mildly feared situation and ending with the most feared situation.

The patient is gradually exposed to each level of the hierarchy while staying relaxed. Because relaxation and fear are incompatible responses, the association between the feared stimulus and anxiety is weakened through counterconditioning.

9. Question 8: Extended Writing – Ethical Issues in Research |

Question: Discuss ethical issues in psychological research. Refer to one study you have learned about. [6 marks]

Model answer: One ethical issue is deception. In Asch’s conformity study, participants were told they were taking part in a visual perception test, but the real aim was to measure conformity. This means fully informed consent was not possible because participants did not know the true purpose.

Another issue is protection from harm. Although Asch’s study was not physically harmful, participants may have felt embarrassed, confused, or stressed when they realised they had agreed with an obviously wrong majority. Psychologists must minimise psychological distress.

Researchers can deal with these issues by offering a full debriefing after the study, explaining the true aims and allowing participants to withdraw their data. In some cases, presumptive consent or retrospective consent can be used.

For higher marks, avoid simply listing ethical issues. Explain why each issue matters and suggest one way it can be handled. This shows evaluation, not just knowledge.

10. Marking, Grade Boundaries and Common Mistakes |

In a CCEA-style unit test, short answer questions usually reward precise definitions and accurate command words such as ‘identify’, ‘state’ and ‘outline’. Longer questions reward elaboration, application to a novel scenario, and evaluation.

Mark band What to include Typical weaknesses
1-2 marks Basic knowledge, a correct definition or one accurate point. Vague wording, missing key term, no example.
3-4 marks Clear explanation with accurate terminology and applied example. Knowledge only, no link back to the question.
5-6 marks Detailed explanation plus evaluation, strengths and limitations, or ethical considerations. List-like answer, no evaluative judgement, no evidence.

Grade boundaries are set each session by the exam board, so treat any internal mock percentage as indicative only. A common target is to secure at least 70% of knowledge marks before trying to earn evaluation marks, because evaluation depends on accurate knowledge first.

11. Final Revision Checklist |

Before you sit the unit test, check that you can define all key terms in your own words, not just recognise them. For every study, know the aim, method, main finding and one evaluation point.

Practise command words. ‘Identify’ requires a short answer, ‘outline’ requires a brief description, and ‘discuss’ requires two sides of an argument with a conclusion. Underline command words in the exam to avoid writing too little or too much.

Finally, manage your time by marking value. In a 45-minute paper, spend roughly one minute per mark and leave five minutes at the end to check definitions, spelling of key terms, and whether every part of the question has been answered.
