📚 IGCSE WJEC Art: High-Frequency Assessment Points and Common Mistakes | IGCSE WJEC
In WJEC IGCSE Art and Design, your marks are not simply awarded for making a beautiful final piece. The specification is built around four Assessment Objectives that reward investigation, experimentation, recording and personal response. This article identifies the high-frequency assessment points and the errors that most commonly pull candidates down, so you can revise and present your strongest portfolio.
1. Understanding the WJEC Assessment Objectives | 理解 WJEC 评分目标
The WJEC mark scheme is built on four equally weighted Assessment Objectives: AO1 (develop), AO2 (refine), AO3 (record) and AO4 (present). No matter which component you are working on, every page, experiment and annotation should provide evidence for at least one of these objectives.
WJEC 评分方案建立在四个权重相同的评分目标之上:AO1(发展)、AO2(精炼)、AO3(记录)和 AO4(呈现)。
High-scoring folders show a clear balance across all four AOs. If a portfolio is full of final outcomes but has little research or experimenting, the mark will be capped because AO1 and AO2 evidence is missing.
2. AO1: Contextual Research and Artist Studies | AO1:
High-scoring candidates do not just stick in a printed image of an artist’s work. They select artists who connect to their own theme, identify the artist’s use of formal elements, and explain how that research has influenced their own choices. A strong artist study includes a visual response, not only biographical facts.
Common mistake: copying large amounts of text from a website and writing “I like this artist because the colours are nice”. This is description, not analysis, and earns very little AO1 credit.
3. AO2: Experimenting with Media and Techniques | AO2:
AO2 is about trying different media, materials and processes, then making choices based on what worked well. For example, you might trial pencil, charcoal, biro, acrylic, mono-print, photography or digital layering. Show failures as well as successes, and annotate what you learned.
Many students only write “I used watercolour
