📚 IGCSE WJEC Drama: High-Frequency Assessment Points and Common Errors | IGCSE WJEC
This revision guide identifies the most frequently examined areas in the WJEC IGCSE Drama specification and the mistakes that cost candidates marks. It is designed to sharpen both practical and written responses by linking assessment objectives to clear, repeatable methods.
1. Understanding the Command Words |
WJEC questions use command words such as ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘analyse’ and ‘evaluate’. Each asks for a different depth of response. Describe requires accurate facts and details; explain requires reasons and methods; evaluate requires a judgement about success or effect.
A frequent error is answering every question as if it says ‘describe’. For example, writing ‘I would pause before the line’ is description; writing ‘I would pause before the line to show the character’s doubt and make the audience wonder whether he will confess’ is explanation and effect. High-band answers link choice, intention and impact.
2. Practitioner Terminology and Application |
The four most examined practitioners are Stanislavski, Brecht, Artaud and Boal. Candidates must be able to name specific techniques, not just the practitioner. For Stanislavski, use given circumstances, objectives, actions, emotional memory and the magic if. For Brecht, use alienation, epic theatre, gestus, placards and direct address.
A common error is to call every non-realistic device ‘Brechtian’. Brecht’s techniques are specifically designed to make the audience think critically about social issues rather than become emotionally absorbed. If a candidate cannot explain the intended social or political effect, they should not label the technique as Brechtian.
3. Stage Geography and Blocking |
Stage directions are always given from the actor’s point of view when standing on stage facing the audience. Stage right is the actor’s right, which is the audience’s left. Upstage is furthest from the audience and downstage is nearest. Blocking means the planned movement of actors, including entrances, exits and crosses.
