1. Why Preview Media Studies? |
Many students choose Media Studies expecting a relaxed subject of watching films and browsing social media. The WJEC IGCSE course actually requires rigorous analytical writing and planned creative production, which surprises many learners in the first term.
A summer bridging programme helps you learn the basic language of media analysis before the pressure of deadlines begins. When you already know terms such as denotation, connotation, genre and target audience, classroom discussions become much more productive.
2. WJEC IGCSE Media Studies at a Glance | WJEC IGCSE

WJEC IGCSE
| Component | Description | Skills tested |
|---|---|---|
| Exploring Media | Written examination on set products and unseen texts | Analysis, evaluation, media language |
| Creating Media | Practical production brief with planning and evaluation | Planning, production, reflection |
Check your specification for exact weightings, because they can change between exam series. However, almost all WJEC media courses assess both analytical writing and practical media production.
3. Core Concept 1: Media Language |
Media language is the shared vocabulary used to describe how meaning is created in a text. You need to move beyond saying a film is ‘sad’ or ‘exciting’ and explain which technical codes produce that response.
Start with denotation and connotation. Denotation is the literal description of what you see or hear; connotation is the deeper meaning or association attached to it. For example, a red rose denotes a flower but connotes romance or danger depending on context.
- Camera angles: high angle = vulnerability or weakness; low angle = power or authority.
- Mise-en-scène: costume, lighting, setting, props and colour.
- Editing: shot duration, transitions and rhythm.
- Sound: diegetic and non-diegetic sound shape mood and meaning.
Practise by pausing a TV advertisement at any frame and labelling every technical code you can see. Then ask what connotations each code creates for the product or brand.
