📚 IGCSE WJEC Psychology: Interdisciplinary Integrated Question Training | IGCSE WJEC
In IGCSE WJEC Psychology, integrated questions require you to connect core topics such as memory, social influence, biological psychology, research methods and individual differences. These questions often mirror real-life problems, so examiners reward answers that transfer psychological knowledge across disciplines rather than repeating isolated facts.
1. What Are Interdisciplinary Questions? |
Interdisciplinary questions in WJEC IGCSE Psychology blend at least two topics or two perspectives. For example, a question may give a scenario about a student with test anxiety and ask you to explain the biological stress response, then evaluate a psychological therapy using research evidence. The skill is not simply to recall definitions but to apply, compare and evaluate across boundaries.
WJEC IGCSE
2. Psychology × Biology: Brain, Neurotransmitters and Behaviour |
A typical integrated question asks how low serotonin levels may be linked to depression and why selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used as treatment. You should describe synaptic transmission: a neuron releases neurotransmitters into the synapse, they bind to receptors on the next neuron, and reuptake returns unused serotonin to the presynaptic neuron. Low serotonin activity is associated with mood regulation problems, so SSRIs block reuptake and increase serotonin availability.
To score full marks, link biology to evaluation: drug treatments are quick and can be effective, but they may not address social causes such as isolation, and they can have side effects including nausea or sleep disturbance. This kind of ‘explain and evaluate’ is common in integrated papers.
3. Psychology × Maths: Descriptive Statistics and Data Interpretation |
WJEC integrated questions often include a mini data set and ask you to calculate a measure of central tendency or spread. You may need the mean, median, mode, range or percentage change. For example, before therapy a patient’s anxiety score is 25 and after therapy it is 16. The percentage decrease is (25 − 16) ÷ 25 × 100 = 36%.
Percentage change = (New score − Original score) ÷ Original score × 100
Always show your working, state the units if relevant, and interpret the result. Do not stop at the number: say whether the change is large or small and what that means for the psychological intervention or condition.
4. Psychology × Sociology: Conformity, Culture and Social Norms |
Some integrated questions ask you to discuss cultural variations in conformity or obedience. Asch’s line judgement study (1951) found high conformity rates in an individualist culture, but later replications in collectivist cultures often showed higher conformity because group harmony is valued more strongly. Use terms such as normative social influence, informational social influence and social norms.
A high-level answer may evaluate methodological issues: Asch’s original sample was all male, and the artificial task lacked ecological validity. Linking sociology and research methods shows interdisciplinary thinking that examiners reward.
5. Psychology × Health and Medicine: Stress, Addiction and Treatment |
Integrated health scenarios may describe a person with high stress or addictive behaviour and ask you to apply biological and psychological explanations. For stress, you could explain the sympathomedullary pathway: the hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system, adrenaline is released, and heart rate increases to prepare for fight or flight. For addiction, you might link dopamine reward pathways to the learning explanation of positive reinforcement.
Then evaluate treatments: cognitive behavioural therapy targets maladaptive thoughts, while drug therapy targets neurotransmitter imbalances. Compare effectiveness, side effects, relapse rates and ethical issues. Questions often expect an evidence-based judgement rather than a one-sided list.
6. Psychology × Education: Memory and Learning Strategies |
Scenario questions may ask you to advise a student on revision using memory research. The multi-store model distinguishes sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory, but working memory emphasises active processing. You can apply retrieval practice (testing oneself), spacing (distributing study over time) and elaborative rehearsal
