📚 A-Level CAIE Media Studies: A Parent’s Guide to Supporting Your Child | A-Level CAIE

This guide explains what the Cambridge International A Level Media Studies course involves and how parents can help at home. You do not need to be a media expert to support your child; asking good questions, discussing everyday media and helping with time management can make a real difference.

1. What is CAIE A Level Media Studies?

CAIE A Level Media Studies (syllabus 9607) is an analytical and creative subject. Students study how media products such as film, television, advertising, newspapers, magazines, music videos, video games and social media create meaning, attract audiences and operate as industries.

CAIE A Level

The course balances close reading of media texts with practical production work. Students learn to apply key concepts and contexts, and they also plan and create their own media products for coursework.

2. Syllabus structure and assessment overview |

At AS Level, students complete two components: the Foundation Portfolio (coursework) and Media Texts and Contexts (a written examination). At A Level, they add the Advanced Portfolio (coursework) and Critical Perspectives (a written examination).

Component Assessment type Weight in A Level
AS Foundation Portfolio Coursework 25%
AS Media Texts and Contexts Written exam 25%
A2 Advanced Portfolio Coursework 25%
A2 Critical Perspectives Written exam 25%

Parents can help by understanding that both coursework and exams matter. The practical portfolios reward planning, research and reflection, while the exams reward precise analysis, use of terminology and evaluative judgement.

3. Key concepts: media language |

Media language is the toolkit of codes and conventions used in media texts. Students learn to analyse camera shots, editing, sound, lighting, layout and mise-en-scène, and to distinguish denotation (what is seen) from connotation (what is suggested).

Semiotics is central: signs, signifiers, genre conventions and narrative structures are used to explain how a text communicates. Exam answers should use terms such as close-up, low-angle shot, diegetic sound and enigma code accurately.
