📚 Are consumers rational? |
In A-Level Economics, the assumption of rational consumer behaviour is the starting point for demand theory. A rational consumer is one who weighs costs and benefits, ranks preferences consistently, and chooses the combination of goods that maximises total utility within a limited budget. This model produces clear predictions, but real consumers often appear impulsive, emotional, and easily influenced by irrelevant information.
1. The Rational Consumer Assumption |
Neoclassical economics assumes that consumers are ‘rational economic agents’ with complete, transitive and non-satiated preferences. Completeness means a consumer can compare and rank any two bundles, transitivity means preferences are consistent, and non-satiation means more of a good is generally preferred to less. These assumptions allow economists to model choice as a constrained optimisation problem.
|---|---|
| Completeness | 完备性 | Consumers can rank any two bundles | 消费者能排列任意两个组合 |
| Non-satiation | 非餍足性 | More is generally preferred | 通常认为越多越好 |
The rational consumer is also assumed to maximise utility subject to a budget constraint. This means that for any given income and prices, the consumer picks the affordable bundle on the highest possible indifference curve. The model is not claiming consumers consciously perform calculations, but that their behaviour can be described as if they do.
2. Utility Maximisation and Marginal Analysis |
Utility is the satisfaction obtained from consuming a good. Total utility rises as consumption increases, but marginal utility, the extra satisfaction from one more unit, tends to fall. This is the law of diminishing marginal utility. A rational consumer will keep consuming until marginal utility falls to the price paid.
With two goods X and Y, the consumer maximises utility when the marginal utility per pound spent is equal across all goods. This equi-marginal principle is written as:
MU₁ / P₁ = MU₂ / P₂
If the ratios were unequal, the consumer could reallocate spending from the lower-utility-per-pound good to the higher one, raising total utility without increasing total expenditure. Therefore, the demand curve reflects diminishing marginal utility: consumers will only buy more if the price falls.
3. Information and Perfect Decision-Making |
The standard rational model assumes consumers have perfect information about prices, quality, and their own preferences. In reality, information is costly to obtain and processing capacity is limited. Consumers often make decisions under uncertainty and rely on experience, brand reputation, or price signals as proxies for quality.
Imperfect information can lead to adverse selection and moral hazard in product markets. For example, buyers of used cars cannot easily judge quality, so low-quality cars may drive high-quality cars out of the market. These failures show that even rational individuals can make inefficient choices when information is missing.
