1. The Building Blocks of Matter | 物质的构成单元
All matter is made of atoms. An atom is the smallest particle of an element that keeps the chemical identity of that element. In IGCSE chemistry, you need to picture the atom as a tiny, dense nucleus surrounded by electrons moving in energy levels called shells.

The nucleus contains protons and neutrons, which are collectively called nucleons. Protons carry a positive charge, neutrons carry no charge, and electrons carry a negative charge. Since the atom is neutral overall, the number of protons must equal the number of electrons.

Notice that the relative mass of an electron is only about 1/1840 that of a proton, so almost all of the atom’s mass is concentrated in the nucleus. This is why the nucleus is described as dense.

2. Atomic Number and Mass Number | 原子序数与质量数
Every element can be identified by its atomic number, sometimes called the proton number. The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in the nucleus, and it is this value that decides which element the atom belongs to.

The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Therefore the number of neutrons can be calculated simply as A − Z.

For example, sodium has an atomic number of 11 and a mass number of 23. So one neutral sodium atom contains 11 protons, 11 electrons and 23 − 11 = 12 neutrons. In exam questions, always circle the two numbers and subtract them carefully.
