Paper 6 of the Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry syllabus (code 0620) is known as the ‘Alternative to Practical’. Paper 6 lasts 1 hour and is worth 40 marks. It contributes 20% of your final IGCSE grade, so it carries exactly the same weight as the practical test (Paper 5). You do not perform any experiment; instead, you answer questions about experiments that are described to you on the paper.

Every Paper 6 question begins with a command word that tells you exactly what the examiner wants. Misreading command words is one of the most common reasons for losing marks. Here is a quick guide to the words that appear again and again.

‘State’ or ‘Name’: give a single word or short phrase; no explanation is required.
