📚 Describing the Sequence of Steps in A-Level Biology | A-Level

Many Cambridge A-Level Biology questions ask you to ‘describe the sequence of steps’ in a process such as DNA replication, the cardiac cycle, or the light-dependent reactions. This skill is about accurate recall, logical ordering, and precise scientific language.

1. Why Step Sequences Matter |

Many Cambridge A-Level Biology papers include questions that begin with ‘describe the sequence of steps’ or ‘describe the events that occur’. These questions are common in topics such as DNA replication, photosynthesis, respiration, the cardiac cycle, synaptic transmission, and immune responses.

Examiners award marks for both the correct events and the correct order. A candidate who writes the right facts in a jumbled order will often lose the sequence marks, even if each individual statement is biologically true.

Mastering sequence answers therefore improves performance across multiple topics, because the same skill of ordering events is transferable.

2. Reading the Command Word |

The command word ‘describe’ requires you to state what happens, not why it happens. For a sequence question, this means a chain of observable or measurable events, rather than an explanation of causes.

If the question asks ‘describe and explain’, you must then add causal reasons after each event, such as ‘because the membrane is more permeable to sodium ions’. Mixing up these two command words can waste time and obscure your sequence.

Other command words such as ‘outline’ or ‘list’ may allow fewer connectives, but ‘describe the sequence of steps’ explicitly expects a flow from start to finish.
