1. The inclined plane model | 斜面模型

An inclined plane is modelled as a flat, fixed surface making an angle θ with the horizontal. A particle on the plane is treated as a point mass. Unless otherwise stated, the plane may be smooth (no friction) or rough, and the string, if used, is light and inextensible.

斜面被建模为与水平面成 θ 角的固定平面。位于斜面上的物体视为质点。除非题目另有说明,斜面可能光滑(无摩擦)或粗糙;若涉及绳,绳视为轻质且不可伸长。

Air resistance and rotational effects are ignored. This allows the problem to be solved using only Newton’s laws in two perpendicular directions.

2. Resolving weight into components | 重力的分解

For a particle of mass m on a slope at angle θ to the horizontal, its weight mg acts vertically downwards. Since motion can only occur parallel to the slope, the weight is resolved into two components: one parallel to the plane, mg sin θ, and one perpendicular to the plane, mg cos θ.

对于倾角为 θ 的斜面上质量为 m 的物体,重力 mg 竖直向下。由于物体只能沿斜面运动,因此将重力分解为两个分量:平行于斜面的 mg sin θ 和垂直于斜面的 mg cos θ。

mg sin θ (down the slope)
mg cos θ (perpendicular to the slope)

Check the angle: when θ = 0°, sin θ = 0 and cos θ = 1, so the parallel component vanishes and the perpendicular component becomes mg, as expected.

3. Normal reaction and friction | 法向反力与摩擦力

The normal reaction R is the contact force exerted by the plane perpendicular to its surface. If there is no acceleration perpendicular to the plane, it balances the perpendicular component of the weight, so R = mg cos θ.

法向反力 R 是斜面垂直于接触面施加的力。如果沿垂直斜面方向没有加速度,它就会平衡重力的垂直分量,因此 R = mg cos θ。

Friction acts along the plane. If the plane is smooth, F = 0. If rough, the friction force F opposes motion or the tendency to move. It satisfies F ≤ μR, where μ is the coefficient of friction. At limiting equilibrium or when sliding, F = μR.
