In Edexcel A-Level Chemistry, structure determination questions often ask you to combine mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and ¹H NMR evidence. A single spectrum is rarely enough to identify an unknown organic compound; the marks come from linking each piece of evidence to a structural feature.

1. Why Combined Analysis? | 为什么需要综合分析

Each technique answers a different question. Mass spectrometry gives the molecular mass and molecular formula, infrared spectroscopy identifies functional groups, and ¹H NMR shows the number, kind and neighbouring relationships of hydrogen atoms.
