1. Understanding the Specification and Assessment |

Edexcel Combined Science 099 is a double-award qualification covering biology, chemistry and physics in two exam papers per science. Each paper includes multiple-choice, structured, short-answer and extended-response questions.

Paper 1 tests core practicals and theory from the first half of the specification; Paper 2 tests the remaining topics and synoptic links. Use the official specification and past papers as your primary resources.

2. Cell Biology and Microscopy |

Magnification is calculated as image size divided by actual size. Remember to convert all lengths to the same unit before calculating.

magnification = image size ÷ actual size

In osmosis, water moves across a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution. Exam questions often ask you to predict mass changes in potato cylinders.

When drawing cells from a microscope, use a sharp pencil, label visible structures, and do not shade large areas. State the magnification underneath the drawing.

3. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |

Atoms contain protons, neutrons and electrons. The atomic number gives the number of protons, while the mass number is the total of protons plus neutrons.

number of neutrons = mass number − atomic number

Electron arrangement determines chemical reactivity. Group 1 metals lose one outer electron, whereas Group 7 non-metals gain one electron to form halide ions.

In the periodic table, atomic radius generally increases down a group and decreases across a period. Use these trends when explaining reactivity or intermolecular forces.

4. Bonding and Chemical Reactions |

Ionic bonding involves electron transfer from metals to non-metals, producing oppositely charged ions held by strong electrostatic forces. Covalent bonding involves shared pairs of electrons.

Balanced equations must have the same number of each type of atom on both sides. For example, CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O.

CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O

Metals conduct electricity because delocalised electrons move through the lattice. Ionic compounds conduct only when molten or dissolved, because the ions are free to move.

5. Forces and Motion |

Newton’s second law links force, mass and acceleration: F = m × a. Weight is a force given by W = m × g, where g is gravitational field strength.

F = m × a
W = m × g

Distance-time graphs and velocity-time graphs are common. Gradient of a distance-time graph gives speed; gradient of a velocity-time graph gives acceleration, and area under it gives distance travelled.

Forces can be contact forces, such as friction and tension, or non-contact forces, such as gravity and magnetism. Draw free-body diagrams to show direction and relative magnitude.

6. Energy Transfers and Resources |

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred, stored or dissipated. Efficiency = useful output energy transfer ÷ total input energy transfer × 100%.

efficiency = (useful output ÷ total input) × 100%

Renewable resources include solar, wind, hydroelectric and biomass. Non-renewables include coal, oil, gas and nuclear fuel. Be ready to compare their advantages and disadvantages.

The specific heat capacity equation ΔE = m × c × ΔT links energy change, mass, specific heat capacity and temperature change. Use it in heating and cooling calculations.

ΔE = m × c × ΔT

7. Waves and the Electromagnetic Spectrum |

Wave speed, frequency and wavelength are related by v = f × λ. For all electromagnetic waves, the speed in a vacuum is approximately 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s.

v = f × λ

In transverse waves, oscillations are perpendicular to energy transfer; in longitudinal waves, oscillations are parallel. Sound is longitudinal, whereas light is transverse.

The electromagnetic spectrum runs from radio waves to gamma rays in order of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength. Different regions have different uses and dangers.

8. Ecosystems and Homeostasis |

Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using light energy. The word equation is carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen.

carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen

Homeostasis maintains a stable internal environment. Negative feedback reverses a change, such as increasing body temperature triggering sweating and vasodilation.

In ecosystems, energy is lost at each trophic level through respiration, movement and undigested material. This explains why food chains are usually short.

9. Quantitative Chemistry and Calculations |

Mole calculations require using the formula n = m ÷ M, where n is amount in mol, m is mass in g, and M is molar mass in g/mol.

n = m ÷ M

Concentration is amount divided by volume, often expressed in mol/dm³ or g/dm³. Titration calculations require careful conversion from cm³ to dm³ by dividing by 1000.

Use relative formula mass to convert between mass and moles. In a balanced equation, the mole ratio tells you the ratio of reacting substances.

10. Electricity and Magnetism |

Ohm’s law states that V = I × R. Series circuits share the same current, while parallel circuits share the same potential difference across branches.

V = I × R

Transformers only work with alternating current and follow the equation Vₚ ÷ Vₛ = Nₚ ÷ Nₛ. Electromagnetic induction occurs when a conductor cuts magnetic field lines.
