Globalisation and International Marketing |

📚 Globalisation and International Marketing |

Globalisation has reshaped the business environment by increasing the interdependence of national economies through cross-border trade, capital flows, technology transfer and labour migration. For A Level Business candidates, understanding globalisation means going beyond definitions to analyse how managers choose and adapt international marketing strategies in order to build competitive advantage in diverse markets.

1. Defining Globalisation and International Marketing |

Globalisation refers to the process by which businesses, markets and cultures become increasingly integrated across national borders. It is driven by falling trade barriers, improvements in transport and communication, and the growth of multinational corporations (MNCs).

International marketing is the planning and execution of marketing activities across more than one country. It involves deciding whether to treat the world as one market or to adapt the offer to each local market.

At A Level, exam questions often ask candidates to distinguish between globalisation as an external environment and international marketing as a strategic response.

2. Drivers of Globalisation |

Several factors accelerate globalisation. Trade liberalisation through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and regional trade blocs such as the EU or ASEAN has reduced tariffs and quotas, making cross-border selling cheaper and more predictable.

Technological change is another powerful driver. Containerisation, air freight, the internet and mobile communications have lowered transport and communication costs, enabling even small firms to reach international customers.

Other drivers include the growth of global consumer tastes, increased foreign direct investment (FDI), and the rise of emerging markets such as China, India and Brazil.

In addition, governments may actively attract FDI by offering tax incentives, infrastructure and deregulation, further integrating their economies into global value chains.

3. Benefits and Costs of Globalisation for Business |

Globalisation offers businesses access to larger customer bases, economies of scale, lower input costs through global sourcing, and the ability to spread risk across multiple markets. A firm that sells in many countries is less dependent on one domestic economy.

However, globalisation also brings costs and risks. Firms face more intense competition, exchange rate volatility, cultural differences, longer supply chains, and reputational risk if labour or environmental standards in overseas operations are questioned.

A balanced evaluation should distinguish between short-term cost advantages and long-term strategic vulnerability, such as over-dependence on one low-cost supplier country.

4. International Market Entry Strategies |

Businesses can enter foreign markets in several ways, each with different levels of investment, control and risk. Exporting is often the first step because it requires little local investment, but it may involve tariffs and transport costs.

Licensing and franchising allow a firm to grant another party the right to use its brand, technology or business model in return for fees or royalties. These methods enable faster expansion with lower capital, but the firm has less control over quality and brand image.

Joint ventures and strategic alliances involve sharing ownership and expertise with a local partner. They provide local knowledge and shared risk, but decision-making can be slow if partners disagree.

Wholly owned subsidiaries, either through greenfield investment or acquisition, give the highest control and profit retention, but require the greatest resource commitment and expose the firm to higher political and operational risk.

The table below summarises the key trade-offs.

5. Standardisation vs Adaptation (Global-Local Dilemma) |

A central debate in international marketing is whether to standardise the marketing mix globally or adapt it to local markets. Standardisation means offering the same product, price, promotion and place strategy worldwide.

Standardisation allows firms to exploit economies of scale, maintain a consistent brand image, and simplify coordination. It works best for products with universal appeal, such as luxury goods, technology devices or global fast-food brands.

Adaptation means modifying elements of the marketing mix to suit local tastes, incomes, regulations and cultural norms. It may raise costs, but it can increase customer relevance and market share.

Many firms adopt a middle path called ‘glocalisation’: think globally, act locally. A global brand core is retained, but certain features or messages are adapted.

Exam answers should link this choice to the product type, target market
