📚 Homeostasis: Maintaining a Stable Internal Environment |
Homeostasis is one of the defining ideas in A-Level Biology: it explains how living organisms keep their internal environment within narrow, life-compatible limits even when the outside world changes. This article covers the core principles of negative feedback, thermoregulation, blood glucose control, osmoregulation, and the role of the kidney, with a brief look at stomatal control in plants.
1. Defining Homeostasis |
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment within narrow limits, despite external or internal changes. In mammals, the key variables under homeostatic control include core body temperature, blood glucose concentration, blood water potential, blood pH, and carbon dioxide concentration. Homeostasis does not mean a fixed, unchanging state; it means a dynamic equilibrium in which conditions fluctuate slightly around a set point and are corrected by control systems.
All homeostatic systems require three components: receptors that detect change, coordination centres that process information, and effectors that bring about corrective responses. The communication between these components is usually by the nervous system, the endocrine system, or both.
2. Why Homeostasis Is Essential |
Cells can only function efficiently within narrow physical and chemical limits. Enzymes, which control nearly all metabolic reactions, have an optimum temperature and pH; beyond these limits their tertiary structure is disrupted and they denature. Membrane proteins, such as channel and carrier proteins, also change shape if temperature or pH deviates too far, so transport processes fail.
Water potential is equally critical: if blood water potential falls too low, cells lose water by osmosis and shrink; if it rises too high, cells swell and may
