📚 How to Avoid Common Pitfalls in A-Level Economics | A-Level
Many A-Level Economics candidates understand the subject but still drop marks through predictable errors. They confuse shifts with movements, neglect precise terminology, draw incomplete diagrams, and treat evaluation as an afterthought. This guide explains how to avoid these common pitfalls and improve exam performance.
1. Confusing Shifts of Curves with Movements Along Curves |
A movement along a demand or supply curve and a shift of the whole curve are not the same. A movement is caused only by a change in the price of the good itself. A shift is caused by a non-price determinant, such as income, advertising, production costs, taxes, or the prices of related goods.
Before writing ‘demand increases’, ask whether the product price changed. If price fell, write ‘quantity demanded increases’ and show a movement along D. If income or tastes changed, write ‘demand increases’ and shift the demand curve to the right, labelling the new curve D₂.
2. Misapplying the Concept of Elasticity |
Elasticity questions reward accurate use of percentage changes. Price elasticity of demand is calculated by the equation:
PED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔP
A common mistake is to compare negative signs as if -2 were smaller than -0.5. Use absolute values: a PED of -2 means demand is elastic because |PED| > 1, while -0.5 means inelastic because |PED| < 1. Also remember that elasticity varies along a straight-line demand curve, so do not label a whole line as elastic or inelastic unless the question requires a range.
3. Forgetting Ceteris Paribus and Time Lags |
Economic theories rely on ceteris paribus, meaning other things equal. If you write that higher interest rates reduce consumer spending, you should add that this assumes income, confidence, and inflation expectations remain unchanged. Without this assumption, the predicted effect may not appear in real data.
Time lags also matter. Monetary policy can take 12 to 24 months to affect real GDP and inflation. Supply-side reforms such as education and training may take years to raise productivity. In evaluation, acknowledge these delays instead of assuming an instant result.
4. Using Weak or Inaccurate Definitions |
Precise definitions are quick marks in Cambridge Economics. Define opportunity cost as the value of the next best alternative forgone, not simply ‘what you lose’. Define inflation as a sustained rise in the general price level, not a one-off increase in a single market.
Keep a glossary of high-frequency terms: scarcity, opportunity cost, positive and normative statements, PED, PES, market failure, externalities, public goods, GDP, real vs nominal values, inflation, unemployment, current account, and exchange rates. Writing definitions in your own words helps you reproduce them under time pressure.
5. Writing Descriptive Rather Than Analytical Answers |
Explain and analyse questions require a chain of reasoning, not a list of facts. For example, do not just say ‘a minimum wage can cause unemployment’. Write: a higher minimum wage raises labour costs for firms; firms may substitute capital for labour or reduce hiring; therefore some low-skilled workers may lose jobs or face fewer hours.
Use connectives such as therefore, because, this leads to, and as a result. Every analytical point should answer why and how, not just what. Two-step reasoning is the minimum; three-step reasoning is better for high marks.
6. Neglecting Evaluation or Bolting It On | 评估缺失或生硬附加
Evaluation should be woven through an essay, not attached in one final sentence. For a discuss question, weigh the size of effects, distinguish short run from long run, compare stakeholder impacts, and question the assumptions behind the theory. Use phrases such as ‘it depends on’, ‘the magnitude matters’, and ‘in the long run’.
For example, when evaluating a tariff that protects domestic producers, do not stop at saying domestic jobs are saved. Also consider higher prices for consumers, possible retaliation by trading partners, loss of allocative efficiency, and whether infant industries genuinely become competitive. A strong evaluation judges which effect is likely to dominate in
