Marketing Planning (A Level) | 营销规划(A Level)

📚 Marketing Planning (A Level) | 营销规划(A Level)

Marketing planning is the structured process of setting marketing objectives, analysing the current situation, and deciding how to use the marketing mix to achieve those objectives. It converts a firm’s corporate objectives into practical marketing actions.

1. What is Marketing Planning? |

Marketing planning is the systematic process of analysing the current market situation, setting marketing objectives, and deciding how to use the marketing mix to achieve those objectives. It turns broad corporate goals into detailed marketing actions.

Do not confuse marketing planning with the marketing plan itself: planning is an ongoing decision-making process, while the plan is the written document that summarises the chosen strategies and budgets.

2. The Marketing Planning Process |

The typical marketing planning process follows a logical sequence: analyse corporate objectives, carry out a marketing audit such as SWOT, set marketing objectives, design marketing strategies, decide the marketing mix, implement the plan, and finally monitor and control performance.

Key stages can be summarised as:

  • Corporate objectives → marketing audit → marketing objectives → marketing strategy → marketing mix → implementation → control

Although the stages appear linear, in practice managers often revisit earlier steps when new information emerges, so planning should be iterative.

3. SWOT Analysis in Marketing Planning | 营销规划中的SWOT分析

A SWOT analysis is a common tool used in the marketing audit. It identifies internal strengths and weaknesses, and external opportunities and threats, helping managers match resources to market conditions.

Strengths / 优势: strong brand, loyal customers, skilled staff Opportunities / 机会: growing markets, new technology, weak rivals
Weaknesses / 劣势: high costs, limited distribution, outdated products Threats / 威胁: new entrants, changing tastes, stricter regulations

Managers use SWOT to build on strengths, correct weaknesses, exploit opportunities, and defend against threats. A strength that matches an opportunity can create a competitive advantage.

4. Marketing Objectives |

Marketing objectives are specific, measurable targets for the marketing function. Examples include increasing market share to 15%, raising brand awareness among 18-24 year-olds by 20%, or launching two new products within 12 months.

Good objectives should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. They must also be consistent with corporate objectives, such as profit growth or diversification.

Market share can be calculated as:

Market share % = (Company sales ÷ Total market sales) × 100

This simple measure helps managers assess competitive performance over time.

5. Marketing Strategy and Segmentation |

A marketing strategy is the medium-to-long-term plan for achieving marketing objectives. It often begins with market segmentation, which divides a broad market into smaller groups of consumers with similar needs or characteristics.

Common segmentation bases include demographic, geographic, psychographic, and behavioural factors.

  • Geographic / 地理: region, urban or rural, climate
  • Psychographic / 心理: lifestyle, values, personality
  • Behavioural / 行为: usage rate, loyalty, benefits sought

Effective segmentation allows a business to design products and promotions that closely match customer needs, reducing wasted marketing expenditure.

6. Targeting and Positioning |

After segmentation, a business selects which segments to target. It may choose a mass market strategy, aiming at the whole market with one offer, or a niche strategy, focusing on a narrow and specific segment.

Positioning involves creating a clear image of the product in the minds of target consumers. A perceptual map is often used to compare brands on dimensions such as price and quality.

A unique selling point (USP) is a feature or benefit that differentiates a product from rivals. Effective positioning and a strong USP help build customer loyalty and support premium pricing.

7. The Marketing Mix and Integration |

The marketing mix is the set of controllable tactical tools that a firm combines to influence demand. For physical goods, the traditional 4Ps are product, price, place, and promotion; for services, people, processes, and physical evidence are often added.

An integrated marketing mix means the elements are consistent and reinforce each other. For example, a premium-priced luxury watch should be sold through exclusive retailers, packaged elegantly, and promoted through high-status media.

Lack of integration can confuse customers and damage the brand. If a product is advertised as high quality but distributed through discount stores, consumers may doubt its value.

8. Marketing Budgets |

A marketing budget is the financial amount allocated to marketing activities over a given period. It may cover advertising, sales promotions, market research, distribution support, and digital campaigns.

Common budgeting methods include the objective-and-task method, percentage of sales, competitive parity, and the affordable method. The objective-and-task method is generally most logical because it links spending directly to required tasks.

Once the plan is implemented, managers compare actual spending with the budget using variance analysis. The formula is:

Budget variance = Actual spend − Budgeted spend

A positive variance may mean overspending, which requires investigation and corrective action.

9. Benefits of Marketing Planning |

Marketing planning gives the business a clear direction and helps managers prioritise activities. It improves coordination between departments such as production, finance, and sales, because everyone works towards the same marketing objectives.

By identifying opportunities and threats early, planning reduces risk and allows the firm to allocate resources more efficiently. It also provides a benchmark for control: actual results can be compared with planned targets, and corrective action can be taken.

Planning can also motivate staff, because clear targets and responsibilities create a sense of purpose.

10. Limitations of Marketing Planning |

Marketing planning can be expensive and time-consuming, especially for small firms. It also relies on forecasts and market research that may be inaccurate, making the plan less reliable in a fast-changing environment.

Rigid plans may reduce flexibility and creativity. If managers follow the plan too strictly, they may miss unexpected opportunities or fail to react quickly to competitor moves.

Therefore, marketing planning should be treated as a guide rather than a fixed set of instructions. Regular reviews and contingency plans help overcome these limitations.

11. Exam Tips for Cambridge A Level |

In Cambridge A Level Business exams, marketing planning questions often ask you to analyse or evaluate a business’s marketing plan. Always apply your knowledge to the case study rather than giving generic textbook answers.

Use command words carefully: ‘analyse’ requires breaking down causes or consequences; ‘evaluate’ requires weighing benefits and limitations and making a justified judgement. You can use SWOT, SMART, and the marketing mix as analytical frameworks.

For high marks, build a chain of reasoning. For example, better segmentation leads to a more targeted promotion mix, which increases the response rate, reduces wasted spending, and improves profitability.
