1. The Volcano as a Cone | 火山锥的体积

The main body of Mount Vesuvius is roughly conical. For a cone with base radius r and height h, the volume is given by the formula:

V = ⅓πr²h

Assume Vesuvius has a base radius of 2.5 km and a height of 1.2 km. Then the volume is calculated as:

This tells us that the volcano contains about 7.85 cubic kilometres of rock. In standard form, this is 7.85 × 10⁹ m³.

We can also calculate the curved surface area, which is important for estimating exposed rock surface: A = πrl, where l is the slant height.

Here l = √(r² + h²) = √(6.25 + 1.44) = √7.69 ≈ 2.77 km, so the curved surface area is about π × 2.5 × 2.77 ≈ 21.8 km².
