Operations management is the process of converting inputs such as raw materials, labour and capital into finished goods and services. It is central to business success because it influences costs, quality, delivery speed, flexibility and customer satisfaction.

4. Productivity and Efficiency | 生产率与效率
Productivity measures how much output is produced per unit of input. Labour productivity is commonly calculated as output per worker or per hour worked. A rise in productivity means more is produced with the same resources, which lowers average cost.

Labour productivity = Output per period ÷ Number of employees

Efficiency is broader than productivity. It means using resources in the best possible way with minimum waste. An operation can be productive but inefficient if it produces high output but also creates too much defect waste or holds excessive inventory.

Lean production aims to eliminate all forms of waste, called ‘muda’ in the Toyota production system. Waste includes overproduction, waiting time, unnecessary transport, excess inventory, defects, over-processing and unused employee creativity.

Just-in-time (JIT) aims to receive materials only when they are needed in production and to produce only when there is customer demand. It reduces inventory holding costs, improves cash flow and exposes quality problems quickly.

Capacity utilisation measures the proportion of maximum possible output that is actually being used. It shows whether a business is making full use of its resources.

Capacity utilisation = Actual output ÷ Maximum possible output × 100%

Very low utilisation means fixed costs are spread over fewer units, raising average cost. Very high utilisation above 90–95% may cause stress on machinery, overtime costs, bottlenecks and quality problems. Most businesses aim for a high but sustainable utilisation rate.
