Operations Management |

📚 Operations Management |

Operations management is the business function responsible for planning, organising, coordinating and controlling the resources needed to produce goods and services. It converts inputs into outputs through a transformation process, adding value while ensuring efficiency, quality and customer satisfaction.

1. The Role of Operations Management |

The core role of operations management is the transformation process: inputs such as land, labour, capital and enterprise are converted into outputs, which are finished goods or services delivered to customers. This process must add value, meaning the final output is worth more than the sum of its inputs.

Operations managers must balance three key objectives: reducing costs, improving quality and meeting delivery deadlines. Successful operations management directly contributes to higher profits, a stronger reputation and a competitive advantage.

2. Production Methods |

Businesses can choose from three main production methods depending on the nature of the product, the level of demand and the resources available.

Job production involves producing a single, one-off, customised product to meet a specific customer order. Examples include bespoke furniture, wedding cakes and shipbuilding. It offers high quality and customer satisfaction but has high unit costs and is labour-intensive.

Batch production involves producing a group of identical products at the same time, then switching to another group. Each batch goes through the production process together. Examples include bakeries, clothing manufacturers and paint producers. It allows some economies of scale while retaining flexibility, but work-in-progress inventory may be high and machinery may need frequent set-up changes.

Flow production involves producing large quantities of a standardised product on a continuous production line. Examples include car assembly, soft drinks and electronics. It benefits from massive economies of scale and low unit costs, but is capital-intensive, inflexible and vulnerable to breakdowns.
