Polymer deduction questions test your ability to move logically between monomers and polymer chains. In Cambridge A-Level Chemistry, you must be able to classify a polymer, identify its repeating unit, and deduce the monomer or monomers that formed it. This article builds the deduction skills needed for addition polymers and condensation polymers, including polyesters and polyamides.

1. Overview of Polymer Types and Deduction Goals | 聚合物类型与推断目标概述

The first step in any polymer deduction question is to classify the polymer. If the backbone is made only of carbon atoms, it is usually an addition polymer. If ester or amide links appear in the backbone, it is a condensation polymer.

2. Reading Repeating Units in Addition Polymers | 加成聚合物中重复单元的识别

Addition polymers are built from alkene monomers. The original C=C double bond opens to form a saturated carbon-carbon backbone, so the repeat unit has two carbon atoms along the chain for a simple substituted alkene.

Look for the shortest pattern that repeats. In poly(ethene) the chain is …–CH₂–CH₂–CH₂–CH₂–…, so the repeat unit is –CH₂–CH₂–. In poly(chloroethene) the pattern …–CH₂–CHCl–CH₂–CHCl–… gives the repeat unit –CH₂–CHCl–.

The side group must stay attached to the same backbone carbon in both the polymer and the monomer. If a chlorine, methyl or phenyl group appears on every second carbon, it belongs to that carbon and must not be moved.
