Production is the process of converting inputs into outputs. In business, inputs are the resources used in the production process, while outputs are the finished goods or services sold to customers. Production is essential because it creates utility — the ability of a good or service to satisfy consumer wants — and adds value to raw materials.

The tertiary sector provides services to consumers and businesses, such as retail, banking, tourism and healthcare.

3. Factors of Production | 生产要素
The four factors of production are land, labour, capital and enterprise. Land includes all natural resources used in production, such as farmland, forests, minerals and water. Capital includes man-made resources used in production, such as machinery, tools, vehicles and buildings. Enterprise is the factor that organises the other three; entrepreneurs take risks to combine resources and make business decisions.

Capital-intensive production relies heavily on machinery and equipment. This is typical of large-scale industries such as car manufacturing, chemical plants and breweries, where high investment in technology replaces manual labour.

The choice between labour-intensive and capital-intensive production depends on factors such as the cost of labour relative to machinery, the scale of production, the nature of the product, and the level of skill required. For example, if wages are low, labour-intensive methods may be cheaper, but if demand is high and consistent, capital-intensive methods may offer greater economies of scale.

5. Production vs Productivity | 生产与生产率
Production is the total amount of goods and services produced by a business in a given period. Productivity, on the other hand, is a measure of efficiency — it shows the output produced per unit of input, typically per worker per period. Production and productivity are different concepts: a business can have high production but low productivity if it uses many workers to produce a small output per worker.

Productivity = Output per period ÷ Number of workers used

Improving productivity means producing more output with the same level of input, or producing the same output with fewer inputs. Higher productivity leads to lower unit costs, which enables businesses to reduce prices, increase profits or invest in growth.

6. Measuring Productivity | 衡量生产率
Productivity is usually measured as output per worker per time period. For example, if a factory produces 12,000 units in one month and employs 30 workers, the productivity is 12,000 ÷ 30 = 400 units per worker per month.

In the table above, February shows higher productivity even though the number of workers stayed the same — output increased, so efficiency improved. Productivity can also be measured using other inputs, such as capital equipment, but output per worker is the most common measure in business exams.

7. Job Production | 单件生产
Job production involves producing a single, unique item tailored to a specific customer’s requirements. Examples include bespoke tailoring, hand-crafted furniture, custom-made kitchens and major construction projects such as bridges. Each job is different, requiring skilled workers and careful planning.

Disadvantages include: high unit costs because labour and materials are not shared across many units; slow production time; and the need for highly skilled labour, which is expensive and not always available.

8. Batch Production | 批量生产
Batch production involves producing a quantity of identical products in a group or ‘batch’. One batch is completed before switching to another. Bakeries produce bread in batches, clothing manufacturers produce a limited run of a particular shirt size, and pharmaceutical companies produce drugs in batches. The production line is set up each time a new batch begins.

Disadvantages: production must stop while the machinery is reset between batches, which is unproductive time; holding stock of finished and semi-finished goods requires storage space; and items produced may not be as unique as job production.

Products move along a conveyor belt with workers or robots performing specific tasks at each stage.

Disadvantages: extremely high initial investment in machinery and equipment; production is inflexible — it is difficult to change the product to meet new customer demands; workers may find repetitive work demotivating; and if one machine breaks down, the entire production line may stop.
