In A-Level Economics, productive efficiency is a core microeconomic concept used to evaluate how well resources are converted into output. It focuses on the cost side of production and asks whether a firm or economy is producing at the lowest possible average cost. Understanding this idea helps students analyse firm behaviour, market structures, and supply-side performance.

1. Definition of Productive Efficiency | 生产性效率的定义

Productive efficiency exists when a firm produces its output at the lowest point on its average total cost (ATC) curve. At this point, the firm cannot reduce the average cost per unit by changing the scale of production or the combination of inputs, given the current state of technology.

当企业在其平均总成本（ATC）曲线的最低点进行生产时，就存在生产性效率。此时，在现有技术条件下，企业无法通过改变生产规模或要素组合来降低每单位产出的平均成本。

Importantly, productive efficiency is a cost-side concept: it is about producing a given output at minimum cost, not about producing the mix of goods that consumers most want. A firm could be productively efficient while producing goods that society does not value highly.

2. Productive Efficiency on the Average Cost Curve | 平均成本曲线上的生产性效率

On a standard average cost diagram, the average total cost curve is U-shaped. Productive efficiency is achieved at the minimum point of this curve. At this point, marginal cost (MC) equals average total cost (ATC).
