Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities in order to meet project requirements. In A-Level Business, Cambridge students need to understand that a project is a unique, temporary endeavour with a defined start and end, undertaken to achieve specific objectives. Effective project management balances time, cost, quality, scope and risk while coordinating resources and stakeholders. It is widely used in construction, IT, new product development and event management.

1. What is a project? | 什么是项目?
A project is a temporary venture with a defined beginning and end, carried out to create a unique product, service or result. This separates a project from routine business operations, which are repetitive and continuous. Examples include building a bridge, launching a new smartphone, reorganising a warehouse or implementing a new IT system.

Monitoring and control tracks progress against the plan, and closure hands over the final result and reviews lessons learned.

4. Gantt charts | 甘特图
A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart used to plan and schedule project tasks over time. Each task is shown as a bar with a start and finish date, so managers can see overlapping activities, milestones and current progress at a glance.

Gantt charts are popular because they are simple to create and easy for non-specialists to understand. Critical path analysis (CPA) is a planning technique that identifies the longest sequence of dependent activities in a project network. The project manager is responsible for delivering the project objectives within agreed constraints. Their duties include defining scope, assembling the team, allocating resources, coordinating stakeholders, monitoring progress, managing risks and reporting to senior management.

A common tool is stakeholder mapping based on power and interest. Risk management identifies events that could harm or help a project, assesses their likelihood and impact, and plans appropriate responses. Risks may arise from technical problems, supplier failure, resource shortages, regulatory changes or adverse weather.

Resource allocation ensures the right people, equipment and materials are available at the right time. 12. Traditional and agile project management | 传统与敏捷项目管理
Traditional project management, often called the waterfall approach, plans the full scope, schedule and budget upfront and then moves sequentially through the life cycle. It works well for stable, well-defined projects such as construction or manufacturing, where changes are expensive and requirements are unlikely to shift.
