Recording and displaying results |

📚 Recording and displaying results |

Recording and displaying results accurately is a core skill in Cambridge A-Level Biology. Whether you are measuring enzyme activity, counting stomata, or recording heart rate, your data must be organised in a way that allows patterns, anomalies and conclusions to be identified clearly. Examiners reward precise tables, correctly labelled graphs and appropriate statistical presentation.

1. The purpose of recording results |

In any biological investigation, results should be recorded immediately in a permanent form, such as a prepared table or laboratory notebook. Delaying recording introduces memory errors and can lead to fabricated or incomplete data.

A good record allows another person to repeat the investigation and verify the findings. It also makes it easier to identify trends, calculate derived quantities and justify conclusions.

2. Designing a results table |

The independent variable should be placed in the first column, with dependent variable readings in subsequent columns. If repeats are taken, each repeat needs its own column, followed by a mean column. The table must have a clear title stating what was measured.

Units belong in the column header, not next to every value. For example, write ‘Time / s’ rather than putting ‘s’ after each number. Use a forward slash to separate quantity and unit.

Organising the table before starting the experiment helps ensure that no data are missed. It also makes it easier to record repeats in a logical order.

3. Recording raw data with correct precision |

All readings should be recorded to the resolution of the measuring instrument. For a thermometer marked every 0.5 °C, a reading should be written to the nearest 0.5 °C, not estimated to 0.01 °C. Digital instruments should be recorded exactly as displayed.

Do not round raw data before it is entered into a table. If a balance reads 5.20 g, keep the zero because it shows the precision of the measurement.

Decimal places should be consistent within a column. Mixing 5.2, 5.20 and 5.200 in the same column is poor practice.

4. Choosing an appropriate graph |

The choice of graph depends on the type of independent variable. If the independent variable is continuous, such as temperature or substrate concentration, a line graph is usually appropriate. If it is categorical or discontinuous, such as blood group or habitat type, use a bar chart.

Histograms are used when the data show the frequency distribution of a continuous variable, such as a range of leaf lengths. Scatter plots are used to investigate relationships between two continuous variables when neither is controlled.

5. Plotting a line graph accurately |

A line graph must have both axes labelled with the variable name and unit, for example ‘Temperature / °C’. The scales should be linear and spread the plotted points over at least half of each axis. Do not use a broken scale unless necessary.

Plot each point with a small sharp cross or dot-in-circle. Do not join the points dot-to-dot; draw a smooth line of best fit that follows the trend. If there is an obvious anomaly, ignore it when drawing the line.

If the relationship appears curved, draw a smooth curve rather than forcing a straight line.

6. Bar charts and histograms in biology |

Bar charts display means or counts for separate categories. The bars should be of equal width and there should be equal gaps between them. The y-axis must start at zero so that the height of each bar represents the value fairly.

Histograms look similar but are used for continuous frequency data. In a histogram, the bars touch each other because the x-axis is a continuous scale. The area of each bar is proportional to frequency, so unequal class widths must be handled carefully.

In A-Level Biology, you are more likely to draw bar charts for means of discrete categories or counts, and histograms when displaying a size or time distribution.

7. Scatter plots and correlation |

A scatter plot is used when both variables are continuous and neither is deliberately controlled in set intervals. For example, you might plot leaf surface area against stomatal density to see whether there is a relationship.

Plot the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis. If a trend is visible, add a line of best fit, which may be straight or curved. The closer the points lie to the line, the stronger the correlation.

Correlation does not prove causation. A strong correlation between two variables could be due to a third factor, so conclusions should be phrased carefully.

8. Displaying uncertainty and error bars |

When means are plotted, it is good practice to add error bars showing the spread of the data. Error bars may represent the range, standard deviation or standard error of the mean. You must state which measure you used.

Range bars are simple: plot the highest and lowest repeated values around the mean. Standard deviation is more informative because it shows how much individual readings vary around the mean.

If error bars overlap between two groups, the difference may not be significant. Non-overlapping error bars often suggest a real difference, but this should be confirmed by a statistical test.

A common formula for uncertainty from repeats is half the range:

uncertainty = (maximum – minimum) ÷ 2

9. Significant figures in calculated values |

Calculated values such as means, rates and percentages should be rounded to an appropriate number of significant figures. The final answer cannot be more precise than the least precise measurement used in the calculation.

For a mean of repeated readings, give the mean to the same number of decimal places as the raw data. For example, if times are recorded to 0.1 s, the mean should be written to 0.1 s.

When calculating a rate, such as volume of oxygen produced per minute, the rate should usually be quoted to two or three significant figures unless the question states otherwise.

10. Identifying and treating anomalies |

An anomaly is a reading that does not fit the overall pattern. It may be caused by a measurement error, a change in conditions or a biological outlier. Anomalies should be marked clearly on graphs, for example with a circle around the point.

Do not include an obvious anomaly when drawing a line of best fit. However, never delete the raw value from the results table unless you have a valid experimental reason and repeat the measurement.

If an anomaly appears, try to identify its cause. If a tube was leaking or a reading was misread, record this in your notes. Repeating the experiment can help confirm whether the point is truly anomalous.
