A system of simultaneous equations contains two or more equations that use the same variables. A solution must satisfy every equation in the system at the same time. For two linear equations, the solution is the point where the two straight lines intersect.

For example, consider the system below.

x + y = 10
x − y = 4
Adding the two equations gives 2x = 14, so x = 7. Substituting back gives y = 3. The solution is x = 7, y = 3.
