Although many people use the two terms as if they were identical, they describe different layers of digital technology. The internet is a worldwide network of interconnected computers and digital devices. It uses cables, optical fibres, radio links and satellites to allow communication between billions of machines. The internet provides the physical and logical infrastructure that makes global data exchange possible.

The World Wide Web, often shortened to WWW or simply the web, is a collection of interlinked hypertext documents and resources. It is one of many services that run on top of the internet, not the internet itself. Tim Berners-Lee invented the web in 1989 to help scientists share research.
