📚 Understanding Weak Acids: Carboxylic Acids in IGCSE Chemistry | 理解弱酸:IGCSE化学中的羧酸
In the Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry specification, learning objective 4.33 asks you to understand that carboxylic acids are weak acids. This concept is often tested in exams, and it is essential to know exactly what “weak” means in the context of acid chemistry. This article will explain the structural origin of carboxylic acids, their partial ionisation in water, and how they compare with strong acids.
1. What Are Carboxylic Acids? |
Carboxylic acids are a family of organic compounds that contain the functional group -COOH (a carboxyl group). In this group, a carbon atom is double-bonded to an oxygen atom and also single-bonded to a hydroxyl (-OH) group. The general formula for simple carboxylic acids is CₙH₂ₙ₊₁COOH.
The two most common examples you need to know are:
- Methanoic acid, HCOOH – the simplest carboxylic acid.
- Ethanoic acid, CH₃COOH – the main component of vinegar.
Because of the -COOH group, these compounds can release a hydrogen ion (H⁺) when dissolved in water, giving them acidic properties.
2. The Meaning of a Weak Acid |
In chemistry, the strength of an acid depends on how much it ionises (dissociates) in water. A strong acid like hydrochloric acid (HCl) ionises completely in water: nearly every HCl molecule splits into H⁺ and Cl⁻ ions. A weak acid only ionises partially: only a small fraction of the molecules releases a hydrogen ion, and the rest remain unchanged.
The ionisation of ethanoic acid can be represented by a reversible reaction:
CH₃COOH ⇌ CH₃COO⁻ + H⁺
The double arrow (⇌) shows that the reaction is an equilibrium. In the equilibrium mixture, the concentration of undissociated CH₃COOH molecules is much higher than the concentrations of CH₃COO⁻ and H⁺. Therefore, the acid is weak because it only produces a low concentration of H⁺ ions compared to a strong acid of the same concentration.
CH₃COOH ⇌ CH₃COO⁻ + H⁺
3. Why Does the -COOH Group Make a Weak Acid?
The O-H bond in the carboxyl group is polarised because oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen. This allows the hydrogen to be released as H⁺. However, the resulting carboxylate anion (e.g., CH₃COO⁻) is stabilised by resonance, but the molecule still does not donate its proton easily enough to be a strong acid. The key point is that the equilibrium lies heavily towards the reactants, so only a small proportion of acid molecules ionise.
In simple terms, carboxylic acids are weak because their molecules hold onto their hydrogen atom quite strongly, and only about 1% of ethanoic acid molecules ionise in a typical solution.
4. Comparing Strong and Weak Acids |
It is important not to confuse acidity (pH) with concentration. A weak acid can still have a low pH if it is concentrated, but for the same concentration, a weak acid will always have a higher pH than a strong acid.
| Property | Strong acid (e.g., HCl) | Weak acid (e.g., CH₃COOH) |
| Ionisation in water | Complete (100%) | Partial (≈1%) |
| [H⁺] for same concentration | High | Low |
| pH for same concentration | Lower (e.g., pH 1–2) | Higher (e.g., pH 3–5) |
| Electrical conductivity | Good (many ions) | Poor (fewer ions) |
| Reaction rate with metals/carbonates | Fast | Slower |
5. Typical Reactions of Carboxylic Acids |
Even though carboxylic acids are weak, they still undergo the typical acid reactions. You need to know the equations for ethanoic acid with a carbonate, a base, and a metal.
With a carbonate: Acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide
2CH₃COOH + Na₂CO₃ → 2CH₃COONa + H₂O + CO₂
