📚 A-Level Business: Organisational Structure Design | A-Level
Organisational structure is the invisible skeleton of a business. It determines how responsibilities are allocated, how decisions are made, and how different parts of the organisation connect with each other. For A-Level Business students, understanding structure is essential for analysing efficiency, motivation, and control.
1. What Is Organisational Structure? |
An organisational structure is a system that defines specific roles, responsibilities, and reporting relationships within a business. It answers key questions such as: Who supervises whom? How many levels of management exist? Where does authority lie?
The main purpose of a structure is to coordinate work so that resources are used effectively and objectives are achieved. A well-designed structure can reduce confusion, improve communication, and support growth.
Structures are usually shown as organisational charts. These diagrams illustrate the span of control, the chain of command, and the relationship between departments, making the formal network of authority visible.
For example, a small bakery may have a simple flat structure with just an owner and two staff, while a multinational bank needs a tall hierarchy with many layers and clear departmental boundaries.
2. Hierarchy and Span of Control |
The hierarchy refers to the number of levels of management in an organisation from the top to the bottom. A tall hierarchy has many levels, while a flat hierarchy has few. Tall structures allow for closer supervision but can slow decision-making and increase costs.
The span of control is the number of subordinates managed directly by one manager. A wide span means one manager supervises many employees; a narrow span means fewer. The appropriate span depends on task complexity, staff experience, and the nature of communication.
Consider a shop with five sales assistants. If the manager directly supervises all five, the span of control is five. If a team leader is introduced to supervise three assistants, while the manager keeps two, the span narrows and the hierarchy becomes taller.
3. Chain of Command and Delegation |
The chain of command is the route through which authority passes from the top of an organisation to the lowest levels. It follows the principle of unity of command, meaning each employee should report to only one manager. This avoids conflicting instructions and clarifies accountability.
Delegation is the transfer of authority and responsibility from a manager to a subordinate. Effective delegation empowers employees, develops their skills, and frees managers for strategic work. However, managers often hesitate to delegate because of lack of trust or fear of loss of control.
