1. The Meaning of Allocative Efficiency | 配置效率的含义

Allocative efficiency refers to a situation where the resources of an economy are distributed in such a way that the greatest possible welfare is achieved for society. In other words, the economy is producing exactly the right combination of goods and services that consumers most value, given the available resources and technology.

配置效率是指一个经济体的资源以能够实现社会最大福祉的方式进行分配的情形。换言之,在给定可用资源和技术的前提下,经济体恰好生产出了消费者最看重的商品和服务组合。

Formally, an economy achieves allocative efficiency when no reallocation of resources can make one person better off without making someone else worse off. This condition is known as Pareto optimality. At this point, the marginal benefit of consuming the last unit equals the marginal cost of producing it.

Marginal benefit is the additional satisfaction a consumer gains from consuming one more unit of a good, while marginal cost is the additional cost a firm incurs from producing one more unit of output.

Meanwhile, marginal cost tends to rise with output because of the law of diminishing returns: using more labour and capital on a fixed resource eventually produces smaller and smaller extra output.

Allocative efficiency occurs when the value society places on the last unit produced exactly equals the cost of producing it. In a competitive market, the market price acts as a signal for both marginal benefit and marginal cost. The standard condition for allocative efficiency is:

Productive efficiency asks the question: “Can we produce more output with the same resources?”

For example, a textile factory might produce shirts at extremely low cost through efficient machinery and labour division. This shows productive efficiency. However, if the market demand has shifted toward casual wear and the factory keeps producing formal shirts, then the resources are misallocated, even though production itself is cost-effective.

Together, these two surpluses make up total social welfare in a market.

In a perfectly competitive market, allocative efficiency is achieved in both the short run and the long run. The intersection of demand and supply sets the equilibrium price, which equals both MB and MC.
