In A-Level Mathematics, the first derivative f'(x) tells us whether a function is increasing or decreasing and gives the slope of the tangent line. The second derivative f”(x) goes one step further: it tells us how the slope itself is changing. This makes it an essential tool for understanding curvature, classifying stationary points, and modelling acceleration in mechanics.

1. Definition of the Second Derivative | 二阶导数的定义
The first derivative f'(x) describes the rate of change of y with respect to x. The second derivative describes the rate of change of that rate of change. In other words, if y = f(x), then f”(x) is obtained by differentiating f'(x) again.
一阶导数 f'(x) 描述 y 关于 x 的变化率。二阶导数描述的则是这个变化率本身的变化率。也就是说,如果 y = f(x),那么 f”(x) 就是对 f'(x) 再次求导的结果。
f”(x) = d/dx [f'(x)] = d²y/dx²
For example, if f(x) = 2x³ + 3x² – 5x + 1, then f'(x) = 6x² + 6x – 5, and so f”(x) = 12x + 6.

Units are important: if y is measured in metres and x in seconds, then f”(x) has units m/s², because it is a rate of change of a rate of change.
