📚 AQA A-Level Philosophy: Key Concepts and Effective Revision | AQA A-Level
AQA A-Level Philosophy is a demanding but deeply rewarding course. It covers four core areas: epistemology, moral philosophy, metaphysics of God, and metaphysics of mind. To succeed, you must not only remember key arguments but also evaluate them with precision and clarity.
AQA A-Level
1. Introduction to AQA A-Level Philosophy |
AQA A-Level Philosophy is assessed through two written papers. Paper 1 focuses on epistemology and moral philosophy; Paper 2 focuses on metaphysics of God and metaphysics of mind. Each paper contributes 50% of your final grade.
The assessment objectives are central to your revision. You need to show both knowledge and evaluation.
| Assessment Objective | What it requires |
| AO1 | Knowledge and understanding of philosophical concepts, theories and arguments. |
| AO2 | Analysis and evaluation of philosophical concepts, theories and arguments. |
In practice, high-scoring essays reconstruct arguments in a clear premise-conclusion form, identify the strongest objection, and then defend the argument against that objection. This is called “second-order evaluation”.
2. Epistemology: Perception as a Source of Knowledge |
In this unit, you need to compare three positions: direct realism, indirect realism, and idealism. The central question is: do we perceive the world directly as it is?
Direct realism claims that the world is exactly as we perceive it, and that physical objects exist independently of our perception. You perceive tables, chairs and trees directly, not images or sense-data.
The main objections include perceptual variation, illusion, hallucination, and the time-lag argument.
-
Perceptual variation: one coin looks elliptical from an angle and circular from above, but a coin cannot be both elliptical and circular at once. Direct realism seems to make the coin have conflicting properties.
-
Time-lag: because light and sound take time to reach us, we always experience the past. If so, we cannot perceive external objects “directly” in real time.
Indirect realism responds by saying that we perceive sense-data, which are caused by and represent physical objects. For example, when you look at a red apple, the redness you experience is a sense-datum, not the apple itself.
Idealism, especially Berkeley’s position, goes further: there is no mind-independent matter. To be is to be perceived, or to perceive. For Berkeley, objects continue to exist when unperceived because God always perceives them.
| Theory | What we perceive | External world |
| Direct realism | Physical objects themselves | Exists, mind-independent |
| Indirect realism | Sense-data | Exists, causes sense-data |
| Berkeley’s idealism | Ideas in the mind | Only minds and ideas exist |
3. Epistemology: Reason as a Source of Knowledge |
Rationalism argues that reason alone can give us knowledge, especially through the use of intuition and deduction. This contrasts with empiricism, which claims that all knowledge comes from experience.
A useful distinction is between the a priori and the a posteriori. Statements such as “all bachelors are unmarried” and “2 + 2 = 4” can be known independently of experience; they are a priori and necessary.
Descartes’ cogito is the most famous example of rationalist intuition. “I think, therefore I am” is a truth that cannot be doubted in the same way as beliefs about the external world. Descartes then deduces other truths from this foundation.
Innatism is another rationalist view. Plato argues in the Meno that the slave boy “remembers” geometric knowledge without being taught, which suggests the soul had the knowledge already. Descartes and Leibniz also defend innate ideas.
Locke criticises innatism by arguing that the mind is a tabula rasa, a blank slate. If innate ideas existed, every reasonable person would agree on them, but there is no universal consent.
Leibniz replies: “There is nothing in the intellect that was not first in the senses, except the intellect itself.” That is, the mind has innate principles or capacities that shape experience.
Intuition: grasp a basic truth. Deduction: move logically from that truth to new conclusions.
4. Moral Philosophy: Utilitarianism |
Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory: the rightness of an action depends on its consequences. The central principle is the greatest happiness principle.
An action is right if and only if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number.
Bentham’s act utilitarianism evaluates each individual action separately. He developed the hedonic calculus, which measures pleasure by its intensity, duration, certainty, proximity, fecundity, purity and extent. For Bentham, pleasure is simply a quantity; “pushpin is as good as poetry”.
John Stuart Mill defends a qualitative utilitarianism. He distinguishes higher and lower pleasures. Higher pleasures of the intellect are more valuable than lower pleasures of the body, even if less intense.
Mill is often associated with rule utilitarianism: we should follow those rules which generally maximise happiness. This helps respond to objections about justice and fairness, such as the case of punishing an innocent person to prevent a riot.
However, utilitarianism faces further objections. It may require us to violate individual rights, the calculation of happiness is highly unreliable, and it can be too demanding by requiring every action to promote overall welfare.
5. Moral Philosophy: Kantian Ethics |
Kantian ethics is a deontological theory, meaning that duty itself determines rightness, not consequences. For Kant, the only unqualifiedly good thing is a good will.
Kant distinguishes hypothetical imperatives from categorical imperatives. A hypothetical imperative tells you what to do if you want a particular outcome. The categorical imperative commands you to act in a certain way regardless of personal desire or circumstance.
The first formulation of the categorical imperative is the principle of universal law:
Act only on that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.
The second formulation is the formula of humanity:
Act so that you treat humanity, whether in yourself or in others, always as an end and never merely as a means.
For example, making a lying promise fails both formulations: it cannot be consistently universalised, and it treats the other person merely as a means.
Criticisms of Kantian ethics include its rigidity: if a lie could save an innocent life, a Kantian might still refuse to lie. There can also be conflicts between duties, and the theory seems cold because it ignores emotional relationships.
6. Moral Philosophy: Virtue Ethics |
Aristotle’s virtue ethics is agent-centred rather than action-centred. It asks not “What
