Across all three options, examiners consistently demanded three things: correct use of the formula booklet, explicit substitution into standard formulae, and answers given to an appropriate degree of accuracy. For Statistics candidates, this meant showing Σx and Σx² substitutions clearly; for Mechanics candidates, it meant stating the suvat variables before inserting numbers; for Decision candidates, it meant recording every pass of an algorithm in a trace table.

The variance formula that AQA supplied in the legacy booklet came in two equivalent forms. The June 2019 paper rewarded candidates who chose the form compatible with the data given in the question.

σ² = Σ(x−x̄)² / n = Σx² / n − x̄²

The second form, Σx²/n − x̄², is normally faster for grouped or raw data because it avoids calculating each separate deviation. However, when the question already supplies a table of deviations, the first form is safer. Do not confuse σ with σ²: the standard deviation is σ, and the variance is σ².

The following questions are original examples written strictly in the style of the June 2019 MS1B paper. Work through each solution carefully; note how the formula is written first, then substitution follows.

Example 1 | 例题1: A random sample of 40 examination marks gave Σx = 1000 and Σx² = 26 000. Calculate the mean and the standard deviation of these marks.

Solution | 解答:

x̄ = Σx / n = 1000 / 40 = 25

σ² = Σx² / n − x̄² = 26000 / 40 − 25² = 650 − 625 = 25

σ = √25 = 5

The mean mark is 25 and the standard deviation is 5 marks. In an exam answer, this final sentence should always carry the correct units.

平均分为25分,标准差为5分。在考试答案中,最后这句话必须带上正确的单位。

Example 2 | 例题2: Events A and B are independent, with P(A) = 0.3 and P(B) = 0.8. Find P(A ∪ B).

Solution | 解答:

For independent events, the intersection is the product of the individual probabilities.

P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A ∩ B) = 0.3 + 0.8 − 0.24 = 0.86

A common June-series error was omitting the subtraction step entirely. Only mutually exclusive events allow P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) without a correction term.

5. Mechanics Option — Core Skills | 力学选项核心技能

MM1B in June 2019 rewarded a disciplined approach to modelling. Candidates were expected to draw a clear diagram, define a positive direction, and then apply the appropriate equation of motion or force balance.
