This guide covers the essential knowledge, skills, and vocabulary you need for the AQA GCSE Drama specification. Whether you are preparing for the written exam, the devising log, or the performance component, this revision resource breaks down the core topics into clear, exam-focused sections.

1. Understanding Drama & Theatre Roles |

Drama is a collaborative art form. In the theatre, many different roles work together to bring a production to life. You must be able to explain the responsibilities of each role and how they contribute to the overall effect.

  • Actor (演员): Uses voice, movement, and gesture to create a character; interprets the script and responds to the director’s guidance.

  • Director (导演): Has the overall artistic vision; blocks scenes, guides actors, and coordinates the design team to ensure a unified production.

  • Set Designer (布景设计师): Creates the physical environment of the play, including scenery, furniture, and props, considering style, mood, and practical needs.

  • Lighting Designer (灯光设计师): Uses light to establish mood, focus attention, create time of day, and support the atmosphere of each scene.

  • Sound Designer (音响设计师): Plans and operates music, sound effects, and silence to enhance emotion and storytelling.

  • Costume Designer (服装设计师): Designs clothing, wigs, and accessories to reflect character, period, and social status.

Remember that every role communicates meaning to the audience. For example, a red spotlight on a single chair may isolate a character and suggest danger before any line is spoken.

2. The Actor’s Toolkit: Voice & Movement |

The actor’s body and voice are their primary instruments. You should know specific terms and be able to analyse how they create meaning.

Voice (声音): Key elements include pitch (high/low), pace (fast/slow), pause (silence for impact), volume (loud/soft), tone (emotional quality), and articulation (clarity of speech). Accent, intonation, and emphasis on particular words can completely change the meaning of a line.

Movement (肢体): This includes posture, gait, gesture, facial expression, eye contact, and proxemics (the use of personal space between characters). A hunched back and shuffling feet suggest fear or low confidence, while an upright stance and open palms suggest honesty and authority.

Voice (声音) = Pitch + Pace + Pause + Volume + Tone + Articulation

Movement (肢体) = Posture + Gait + Gesture + Facial Expression + Proxemics

3. Stage Types & Staging Configurations |

Different stage types create different relationships between actors and audience. In the exam, you may be asked to explain why a particular staging choice suits a play.

Stage Type Audience Position Dramatic Effect
Proscenium Arch (镜框式舞台) All on one side, viewing through the ‘picture frame’ Creates a clear separation; supports realistic, ‘fourth wall’ naturalism
Thrust (伸出式舞台) On three sides Intimate; forces actors to move in multiple directions; good for soliloquies
Theatre in the Round (环形舞台) On all four sides Maximum intimacy; requires careful blocking so no actor is hidden; creates a ‘shared space’
Traverse (中通道舞台) On two opposite sides Good for confrontation scenes; audience faces each other, creating tension
End-on / In-the-Round (单面/环形变体) Similar to proscenium but without the arch Simpler and more flexible; modern and flexible viewing

Remember that staging choices affect sightlines (whether all audience members can see the action). An actor placed downstage right may block another actor on a thrust stage.

4. Stage Positions & Blocking |

Actors and directors use specific terms to describe positions on stage. These are based on the actor’s point of view when facing the audience.

  • Upstage (上舞台): The area furthest from the audience, toward the back. Historically, the stage was raked (sloped) upward, hence ‘up’. Moving upstage can suggest power or distance.

  • Downstage (下舞台): The area closest to the audience. Moving downstage creates intimacy and can signal confidence or confrontation.

  • Stage Left / Right (舞台左/右侧): From the actor’s perspective facing the audience. Stage left is the actor’s left, not the audience’s left.

  • Centre Stage (舞台中央): The most powerful focus point, often used for key moments.

Blocking (走位) is the planned movement of actors on stage. A good director uses levels (height differences), crosses (moving from one area to another), and counter-crosses (another actor moving to maintain balance) to create visual interest and reveal character relationships.

5. Dramatic Devices & Techniques |

Dramatic devices are tools used by playwrights and directors to communicate meaning and shape audidence experience. You should be able to spot them in a live theatre review and use them in your own devised work.

  • Monologue (独白): A long speech by one character, often alone on stage, revealing inner thoughts.

  • Soliloquy (独自倾诉): A specific type of monologue where the character speaks their thoughts aloud, believing they are alone. Used famously by Hamlet.

  • Aside (旁白): A short comment spoken to the audience, which other characters on stage are supposed not to hear.

  • Split Scene / Cross-Cutting (交替场景): Switching between two locations or time frames within the same scene, often to create building tension or comparison.

  • Freeze Frame / Tableau (定格画面): A pause in action where actors hold their positions, often used to highlight a key moment or theme.

  • Slow Motion (慢动作): Moving in slow motion to intensify an emotion or focus on a critical action.

  • Flashback / Flash-forward (闪回/闪前): Showing events from the past or future, often accompanied by lighting or sound changes.

You must also understand the purpose of dramatic irony (戏剧性反讽), where the audience knows something the characters do not. This builds suspense and can create tragic or comic effects.

6. Genres & Performance Styles |

AQA GCSE Drama requires you to study at least one full play and explore different performance styles. These are the most important ones to know.

AQA GCSE

Naturalism / Realism (自然主义/现实主义): Aims to create a convincing illusion of everyday life. Acting is based on psychological motivation and realistic dialogue. Konstantin Stanislavski (斯坦尼斯拉夫斯基) is the key figure. His system includes ‘magic if’ (魔力假设), emotional memory (情感记忆), and given circumstances (给定情境).

Epic Theatre (史诗剧): Developed by Bertolt Brecht (布莱希特). It aims to remind the audience they are watching a play, not to create emotional illusion. Techniques include breaking the fourth wall (打破第四面墙), placards (标语牌), direct address, and the Verfremdungseffekt (陌生化效果) — making the familiar strange so audiences think critically rather than feel passively.

Physical Theatre (肢体戏剧): A style that prioritises movement and body language over spoken text. Companies like Frantic Assembly (狂乱剧团) use choreographed lifts, falls, and ensemble movement to express emotion and narrative.

Commedia dell’Arte (即兴喜剧): An Italian tradition featuring stock characters (定型角色) like Harlequin and Pantalone, masks, slapstick humour, and improvised scenes.

In the exam, link each style to its intended audience response. For instance, Brecht wants a critical audience; Stanislavski wants an emotionally engaged audience.

7. Set Design & Props |

Set design creates the world of the play. You must be able to analyse a set and explain its effect, using the correct terminology.

Set (布景): Includes all scenery and larger structures. A set can be realistic (a detailed kitchen), abstract (a few geometric platforms), or symbolic (a broken clock representing lost time).

Props (道具): Any objects used by actors during the performance. Hand props (手持道具) are carried by actors; set props (布景道具) are placed on the set. Props must be appropriate to the period and character. For example, a teacup with a chip might suggest poverty or carelessness.

When analysing a set, ask: What is the style (realistic/symbolic)? What colours are used? What levels exist? How does the set change between scenes? What is the relationship between performance space and audience?

8. Lighting Design |

Lighting is one of the most powerful tools for creating mood, focus, and meaning. In your live theatre evaluation, you must be able to describe and evaluate lighting effects.

  • Key functions (主要功能): Visibility (可见度), selective focus (选择性聚焦), mood (情绪), and composition (构图).

  • Colour (颜色): Red = danger/passion; Blue = cold/melancholy; Amber/warm = comfort; Green = sickness/jealousy. Colour changes can indicate time passing or shifts in reality.

  • Intensity (强度): Bright light = confidence, daytime, exposure; Dim light = fear, mystery, intimacy, night.

  • Direction (方向): Downlight from above can create shadows and suggest menace; side lighting can create sculptural effects; backlighting creates silhouettes, suggesting anonymity or power.

  • Special effects (特效): Gobo (图案片) — a stencil placed in front of a lamp to project patterns (e.g., prison bars, forest leaves). Spotlight (聚光灯) isolates a single actor. Blackout (黑场) is a sudden switch to darkness, often at a cliffhanger.

When writing about lighting, always link the effect to the mood and meaning. A single follow spot on a character can show loneliness, while a sudden strobe light can convey chaos or panic.

9. Sound Design & Music |

Sound design includes recorded music, live music, sound effects (SFX), and the use of silence. It is a subtle but crucial element of the drama.

Diegetic sound (剧情内声音): Sounds that characters can hear within the play world, such as a phone ringing within the scene.

Non-diegetic sound (非剧情声音): Sounds added for the audience only, such as background music to build tension or transition between scenes.

Music can establish the historical period, create a specific emotional response, or serve as a leitmotif (主导动机) — a musical phrase associated with a particular character or idea. Silence is equally powerful; a sudden silence after loud noise can shock the audience and make them hold their breath.

In your evaluation, comment on how the sound design worked with the action. Did the music rise to match the actor’s emotional peak? Did a sharp sound effect punctuate a physical blow?

10. Costume & Makeup |

Costumes and makeup tell the audience about a character instantly. They communicate time period, social class, personality, and even emotional state.

  • Silhouette (轮廓): A large, broad costume suggests power; a tight, restrictive costume suggests oppression; a loose, flowing costume suggests freedom.

  • Colour (颜色): Dark colours can suggest seriousness or villainy; bright colours suggest energy or eccentricity; white suggests purity; red suggests danger or passion.

  • Fabric (面料): Silk and velvet suggest wealth; rough cotton or wool suggests poverty; leather can suggest rebellion.

  • Accessories (配饰): Hats, gloves, jewellery, scarves, and spectacles carry specific meanings. A character who removes their gloves before a confrontation may be preparing for violence.

Makeup (化妆): Makeup can age a character, create scars or wounds, and transform an actor into a monster or supernatural being. In pantomime and Commedia dell’Arte, makeup is highly stylised. In naturalistic drama, makeup should be subtle and believable.

11. Devising & The Devising Log |

Devising is the process of creating an original performance from a stimulus (刺激物), such as a photograph, poem, piece of music, or theme. For the AQA GCSE, you must complete a devising log that documents your creative journey.

The devising log has three sections (based on AQA requirements):

  • Section 1: Research & Intentions (调研与意图): What stimulus did you use? What themes and ideas did you explore? What style and genre did you choose? What were your initial intentions as a creator?

  • Section 2: Development & Collaboration (发展与协作): How did you develop your ideas in rehearsals? How did you experiment with voice, movement, and design? How did you respond to feedback? How did you create and refine your final performance?

  • Section 3: Analysis & Evaluation (分析与评价): How did your performance achieve your intentions? What was the impact on the audience? What would you improve? How did your use of theatrical conventions create meaning?

Use precise drama vocabulary in your log. Instead of saying ‘we moved around the stage’, say ‘we used levels and tableaux to create a hierarchy between the two characters’. Instead of ‘the music was sad’, say ‘the minor-key sound motif created a melancholic atmosphere and undercut the character’s cheerful dialogue’.

12. Evaluating Live Theatre & The Written Exam |

The written exam (Component 1: Understanding Drama) tests your knowledge of drama terminology, your understanding of a set play, and your ability to evaluate live theatre.

Key exam tips (关键考试技巧):

  • Use specific terminology (使用具体术语): Do not write ‘the actor was good’ — write ‘the actor’s slow, measured pace and downward gaze conveyed repressed anger’. Include terms like proxemics, levels, diegetic sound, upstage, and leitmotif.

  • Analyse, not describe (分析而非描述): When you mention a memory from a live production, you must explain why it was effective. The examiner wants to see your analysis of impact and intention.

  • Structure your answers (结构化你的答案): In the 32-mark live theatre question, structure your response by purpose. For example, write three paragraphs about different moments, each with a clear point, evidence, and analysis.

  • Understand the play text (理解剧本): For the set play, you must know the plot, themes, characters, structure, and at least three key scenes in detail. You should be able to discuss how the play might be staged, including set, lighting, sound, and costume.

  • Show critical engagement (展示批判性参与): Even if you discuss ideas from the director or the production you watched, add your own judgement. ‘This worked because the stylised movement at this moment prevented sentimentality and made the audience confront the brutality of war.’

Practice writing in the AQA-style structure. For a 4-mark question, give two clear points with examples. For an 8-mark question, develop four points with detailed analysis. For the 20-mark or 32-mark question, plan a longer response with a logical arc, comparing different moments or intentions.
