Factors Affecting Population Change |

📚 Factors Affecting Population Change |

Population change is determined by the interplay of births, deaths and migration. Understanding these factors is essential for geographers to analyse demographic trends and plan for future societal needs.

1. Natural Change |

Natural change is the difference between the number of live births and deaths in a population over a period. It is expressed as the natural increase rate.

NIR = CBR − CDR(单位:‰)

When birth rates exceed death rates, the population grows; when death rates exceed birth rates, it declines. Migration can also offset or amplify this change.

2. Fertility and Mortality Determinants |

Fertility refers to the number of live births per woman, typically measured by the Total Fertility Rate (TFR). Mortality is measured by crude death rate, infant mortality rate and life expectancy.

Key factors affecting fertility include:

  • Education and female employment: higher female education and workforce participation lower desired family size.

  • Access to contraception: family planning programmes reduce unintended pregnancies.

  • Child mortality: when infant survival rates improve, parents may choose to have fewer children.

  • Economic cost of children: in industrialised societies, children are expensive, reducing fertility.

Key factors affecting mortality include:

  • Nutrition and food security: famine and malnutrition raise death rates.

  • Healthcare provision: access to clean water, vaccination and medical services lowers mortality.

  • Disease environments: epidemics such as HIV/AIDS or COVID-19 can raise mortality sharply.

  • War and conflict: wars directly kill people and destroy infrastructure, increasing deaths.

3. Migration |

Migration is the movement of people across a boundary for a certain period. It includes immigration (in-migration) and emigration (out-migration). Net migration equals immigration minus emigration.

Push and pull factors drive migration:

  • Push factors: unemployment, poverty, natural disasters, political persecution, conflict.

  • Pull factors: better jobs, higher wages, political stability, family reunion, better education and healthcare.

  • Intervening obstacles: distance, cost, legal restrictions, physical barriers.

Migration affects population size and structure. For example, young adults moving to cities can increase urban birth rates but leave rural areas with an ageing population.

4. Demographic Transition Model |

The DTM describes how population changes as countries develop. It has five stages.

Stage Birth rate Death rate Population growth
1 High stationary High High Stable / low
2 Early expanding High Rapidly falling Very rapid
3 Late expanding Falling Continuing to fall Rapid
4 Low stationary Low Low Stable / low
5 Post-transition Very low / fluctuating Low but may rise due to ageing Declining / negative

Limitations of the DTM include its Eurocentric basis and the assumption that all countries follow the same path. It does not account for migration or policy interventions.

5. Population Policies |

Governments influence population change through pro-natalist or anti-natalist policies.

Pro-natalist policies aim to raise birth rates. Examples include child allowances, parental leave, tax incentives and subsidised childcare.

Anti-natalist policies aim to lower birth rates. China’s former one-child policy, India’s family planning programmes and Iran’s post-1989 policy are examples. Methods include raising the legal marriage age, providing free contraception and education campaigns.

Migration policies also shape population change, such as selective immigration points systems that attract skilled workers.

6. Socio-economic Factors |

Economic development is closely linked to population change. In agricultural societies, children are economic assets and fertility tends to be high. In industrialised societies, children are economic costs and fertility declines.

Urbanisation also reduces fertility: urban living is expensive, and women have more opportunities for education and work.

Economic crises can cause postponement of marriage and childbirth, reducing birth rates temporarily.

In contrast, extreme poverty can coexist with high mortality and high fertility as a survival strategy.

7. Environmental Factors |

Environmental conditions affect population distribution and migration. People generally avoid extreme environments such as arid deserts, frozen tundra and rugged mountains.

Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes and hurricanes cause short-term displacement and long-term migration. Climate change is increasingly a driver of movement, especially in low-lying coastal areas.

Drought and land degradation reduce agricultural productivity, forcing people to move to cities or other countries.

8. Cultural and Religious Factors |

Cultural norms about family size, marriage age and gender roles influence fertility. For example, in some societies large families are valued for lineage and social status.

Religious teachings can affect contraception use and family planning. The Catholic Church historically opposes artificial contraception, which may lead to higher fertility in strongly Catholic populations.

Education and media shape cultural attitudes. Rising individualism and secularism are associated with lower fertility.

9. Age Structure and Dependency |

Population change is not only about total numbers; age structure matters. The dependency ratio compares the non-working age population (under 15 and over 64) with the working-age population.

Dependency ratio = (Population aged 0–14 + Population aged 65+) ÷ Population aged 15–64 × 100

A high youth dependency ratio is common in developing countries with high fertility. A high old-age dependency ratio results from low fertility and increasing life expectancy, creating pressure on health and pension systems.

Migration of working-age adults can reduce dependency ratios in receiving areas and increase them in sending areas.

10. Case Studies |

Japan: Low fertility (TFR ≈ 1.3) and very low mortality produce a declining and ageing population. Government policies have tried to raise fertility but cultural and economic barriers remain.

Niger: A high TFR (above 6) and high mortality result in rapid population growth, straining education and water resources. Early marriage and limited female education keep fertility high.

Germany: Net immigration has offset natural decrease. Germany’s population has remained relatively stable because much migration has consisted of young workers and refugees.

The United Kingdom: Population change is driven largely by international migration
