📚 IELTS Exam Format Explained | 雅思考试题型全解析

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most widely recognised English proficiency exams in the world, accepted by over 10,000 organisations across 140 countries. Understanding its structure is the first and most critical step toward achieving your target band score.

雅思考试(International English Language Testing System)是全球最受认可的英语水平测试之一,被140多个国家超过10,000家机构所接受。了解考试结构是迈向目标分数的第一步,也是至关重要的一步。

1. Overall Structure | 考试整体结构

IELTS has two versions: Academic and General Training. Both versions assess the same four language skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—but the Reading and Writing sections differ in content and difficulty level. The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, excluding breaks.

雅思考试分为学术类(Academic)和培训类(General Training)两种版本。两个版本都考察听、说、读、写四项语言技能,但阅读和写作部分在内容与难度上有所不同。整个考试时长约为2小时45分钟,不包括休息时间。

Module 部分 Time 时长 Questions 题量
Listening 听力 30 + 10 mins 40
Reading 阅读 60 mins 40
Writing 写作 60 mins 2 tasks
Speaking 口语 11–14 mins 3 parts

The Listening, Reading, and Writing modules are taken consecutively without a break. The Speaking test may be scheduled on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other modules.

听力、阅读和写作模块连续进行,中途无休息。口语考试可以在同一天进行,也可能安排在笔试前七天或后七天内的任一天。

2. Listening Module | 听力模块

The Listening test lasts 30 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet (for the paper-based test). The computer-based test gives only 2 minutes for checking answers. There are four sections, each with 10 questions, making a total of 40 questions.

听力测试时长为30分钟,纸笔考试额外提供10分钟誊写答案到答题卡;机考仅提供2分钟检查答案。整场考试共四个部分,每部分10道题,合计40题。

Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context, such as booking a hotel or enquiring about a course.

第一部分:两人在日常社交场景中的对话,例如预订酒店或咨询课程。

Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context, such as a talk about local facilities or a speech about a community event.

第二部分:日常社交场景中的独白,例如关于本地设施的介绍或社区活动的演讲。

Section 3: A conversation between up to four people in an academic or training context, such as a tutorial discussion or a group project meeting.

第三部分:最多四人在学术或培训场景中的对话,例如辅导课讨论或小组项目会议。

Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject, such as a university lecture on environmental science or history.

第四部分:关于学术主题的独白,例如环境科学或历史方面的大学讲座。

Question types include multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart completion, sentence completion, and short-answer questions. A common trap is that the answers often appear in a different order from the questions, so careful attention is required.

题型包括选择题、配对题、地图/图表标注题、表格/笔记/流程图填空、句子填空和简答题。常见陷阱是音频中答案出现的顺序与题目顺序不一致,因此需要高度专注。

Listening total: 40 questions × 1 point = Band 9 raw score conversion

听力总分:40题 × 每题1分 → 换算为1–9分等级分

3. Academic Reading | 学术类阅读

The Academic Reading test lasts 60 minutes and contains three long passages, each followed by a set of questions. The passages are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, and are written for a non-specialist audience. Topics are of general academic interest, and at least one passage contains a logical argument or detailed reasoning.

学术类阅读考试时长为60分钟,包含三篇长文章,每篇后附一组问题。文章选自书籍、期刊、杂志和报纸,面向非专业读者。主题具有普遍学术性,至少有一篇文章包含逻辑论证或详细推理。

The three passages become progressively more difficult. Total word count is between 2,150 and 2,750 words. Common question types include:

三篇文章难度逐级递增,总字数在2,150至2,750词之间。常见题型包括:

  • Multiple choice 选择题

  • Identifying information (True/False/Not Given) 辨别信息(对/错/未给出)

  • Identifying writer’s views (Yes/No/Not Given) 辨别作者观点(是/否/未给出)

  • Matching headings to paragraphs 段落标题配对

  • Matching features or sentence endings 特征或句尾配对

  • Summary, note, table, or flow-chart completion 摘要、笔记、表格或流程图填空

  • Diagram labelling 图表标注

One key challenge is time pressure: with 40 questions to answer in 60 minutes, you have roughly 90 seconds per question. Skimming and scanning skills are essential to locate information quickly and accurately.

一个重要挑战是时间压力:60分钟内需回答40道题,平均每道题约90秒。快速浏览与定位信息的能力对于准确高效地找到答案至关重要。

4. General Training Reading | 培训类阅读

The General Training Reading test is also 60 minutes long with 40 questions, but the texts are drawn from everyday materials such as advertisements, notices, timetables, official documents, and workplace-related materials. The test is divided into three sections.

培训类阅读考试同样是60分钟、40道题,但文章来源于日常素材,如广告、通知、时刻表、官方文件和工作场所相关材料。考试分为三个部分。

Section 1: Contains short factual texts on everyday topics, such as a supermarket leaflet or a description of a club’s facilities. Section 2: Focuses on workplace-related texts, such as job descriptions, contracts, or staff development materials. Section 3: Contains one longer, more complex text on a topic of general interest, requiring careful reading and inference.

第一部分:包含日常话题的简短事实性文本,如超市传单或俱乐部设施介绍。第二部分:聚焦职场相关文本,如职位描述、合同或员工发展材料。第三部分:包含一篇较长、较复杂的通用兴趣话题文章,需要仔细阅读并进行推理。

Question formats overlap heavily with the Academic version, including True/False/Not Given, matching, and gap-fill tasks. However, vocabulary and sentence structures are generally less demanding, and the scoring thresholds differ—a band 6 in General Training Reading requires fewer correct answers than in Academic Reading.

题型与学术类有大量重叠,包括“对/错/未给出”、配对和填空等。但词汇和句式难度总体较低,且评分标准不同——培训类阅读达到6分所需答对的题目数量少于学术类。

5. Academic Writing Task 1 | 学术类写作任务一

In Academic Writing Task 1, you are presented with a graphic or diagram—such as a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, process diagram, or map—and asked to describe, summarise, or explain the information in at least 150 words. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task, writing in an academic or semi-formal style.

在学术类写作任务一中,你会看到一张图表或示意图——如折线图、柱状图、饼图、表格、流程图或地图——需要以至少150词来描述、总结或解释其中信息。建议用时20分钟,应采用学术或半正式语体。

The key is to identify the main trends, compare data points, and highlight the most significant features—while avoiding personal opinions or speculation. A strong answer often follows this structure:

关键在于识别主要趋势、比较数据点并突出最重要特征,同时避免发表个人观点或猜测。高分答案常遵循以下结构:

  • Paraphrase the question 改写题目要求

  • Give an overview of the main trends 概括主要趋势

  • Describe specific details with data 用数据描述具体细节

Common pitfalls include copying the prompt word-for-word, failing to provide an overview, and describing every single number without grouping related data logically. Cohesive devices such as ‘in contrast’, ‘similarly’, and ‘whereas’ help improve coherence.

常见误区包括逐字照抄题目、没有提供总体概述、以及不加逻辑归类地罗列所有数据。使用“in contrast”“similarly”“whereas”等连接词有助于提升连贯性。

6. General Training Writing Task 1 | 培训类写作任务一

General Training Writing Task 1 requires you to write a letter in response to a given situation, with a minimum of 150 words. The task may be personal, semi-formal, or formal in tone, and is typically one of the following three types:

培训类写作任务一要求你根据给定的情境写一封信,字数不少于150词。信件的语气可能是个人化、半正式或正式的,通常属于以下三种类型之一:

  • Formal letter to a company or institution 写给公司或机构的正式信函

  • Semi-formal letter to a known but not close person 写给认识但不太熟悉之人的半正式信函

  • Informal/personal letter to a friend or family member 写给朋友或家人的非正式/私人信函

You are asked to do one or more of the following: explain a problem, make a request, express dissatisfaction, provide information, or make a suggestion. The instructions always list three bullet points that must be covered fully.

题目要求你完成以下一项或多项任务:解释问题、提出请求、表达不满、提供信息或给出建议。题目中总会列出三个要点,必须全部覆盖。

Tone consistency is critical: using overly formal language in an informal letter, or casual slang in a formal letter, will cost you marks. For example, a letter of complaint to a hotel manager should begin with ‘Dear Sir or Madam’ and end with ‘Yours faithfully’, while a letter to a friend may begin with ‘Dear John’ and end with ‘Best wishes’.

语气一致性至关重要:在非正式信件中使用过度正式的语言,或在正式信函中夹杂俚语,都会导致失分。例如,写给酒店经理的投诉信应以“Dear Sir or Madam”开头,以“Yours faithfully”结尾;而写给朋友的信可以“Dear John”开头,以“Best wishes”结尾。

7. Writing Task 2 (Both Versions) | 写作任务二(两种版本通用)

Writing Task 2 is identical in format for both Academic and General Training versions. You must write an essay of at least 250 words in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. Recommended time is 40 minutes, and the essay is worth twice as many marks as Task 1.

写作任务二在学术类和培训类中的格式完全相同。你需要针对某个观点、论点或问题写一篇不少于250词的议论文。建议用时40分钟,该任务的分值是任务一的两倍。

Common essay types include:

常见文章类型包括:

  • Opinion essays 观点型文章

  • Discussion essays 讨论型文章

  • Problem–solution essays 问题–解决型文章

  • Advantage–disadvantage essays 优缺点型文章

  • Direct question essays 直接问答型文章

A well-structured essay should contain a clear introduction that paraphrases the question and states your position, two or three body paragraphs each with a central idea supported by examples or reasons, and a concise conclusion that restates your view without introducing new information.

一篇结构良好的文章应包含清晰的开头段(改写题目并表明立场)、两至三个主体段(每段有一个核心观点,并用例子或理由支撑),以及简洁的结尾段(重述观点但不引入新信息)。

Marking criteria are: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each criterion is equally weighted at 25%.

评分标准包括:任务回应度、连贯与衔接、词汇资源、语法多样性与准确性。四项标准权重相同,各占25%。

8. Speaking Module | 口语模块

The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner and is recorded. It lasts 11 to 14 minutes and consists of three parts. The test measures your fluency, pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, and vocabulary range.

口语考试是与认证考官进行的一对一面谈,全程录音,时长11至14分钟,共分三部分。考试评估流利度、发音、语法准确性和词汇多样性。

Part 1 (4–5 minutes): Introduction and interview. The examiner asks general questions about familiar topics such as your home, family, work, studies, hobbies, or food. This part is designed to put you at ease and assess your ability to communicate naturally.

第一部分(4–5分钟):介绍与问答。考官会询问关于家庭、工作、学习、爱好或食物等熟悉话题的通用问题。此部分旨在让你放松,并评估你自然交流的能力。

Part 2 (3–4 minutes): Individual long turn. You receive a cue card with a topic and three bullet points. You have one minute to prepare notes, then speak for one to two minutes on the topic. The examiner then asks one or two follow-up questions.

第二部分(3–4分钟):个人陈述。你会收到一张提示卡,上面印有话题和三个要点。你有1分钟时间记笔记,然后围绕话题进行1至2分钟的陈述。之后考官会追问一到两个相关问题。

Part 3 (4–5 minutes): Two-way discussion. The examiner asks more abstract and complex questions linked to the Part 2 topic, such as ‘Why do you think some people prefer living in cities?’ This part assesses higher-level reasoning and the ability to elaborate on opinions.

第三部分(4–5分钟):双向讨论。考官会就第二部分话题提出更抽象、更复杂的问题,例如“为什么你认为有些人偏好居住在城市?”此部分考查高级推理能力和详细阐述观点的能力。

A practical tip: when you don’t understand a question, it is acceptable to ask the examiner to repeat or clarify it. This does not affect your score, whereas silence or giving an off-topic answer will negatively impact your band.

实用技巧:没听懂问题时,可以请考官重复或解释,这不会影响得分;而沉默不语或答非所问则会拉低分数。

9. Band Score System | 分数体系

IELTS results are reported on a nine-band scale, from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user). Each module receives a separate band score, and an overall band score is calculated as the average of the four module scores, rounded to the nearest half band.

雅思成绩采用九分制,从1分(非使用者)到9分(专家级使用者)。每个单项都会获得一个分数,总分是四项分数的平均值,按最近的半分取整。

Band 分数 Description 描述
9 Expert user 专家级
8 Very good user 非常优秀
7 Good user 良好
6 Competent user 合格
5 Modest user 一般
4 Limited user 有限

For example, if you score Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, and Speaking 7.0, the average is (7.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.75, which rounds to an overall band of 7.0. Note that the overall score is rounded to the nearest half band, with .25 rounding up and .75 rounding up to the next half band.

例如,听力7.5、阅读6.5、写作6.0、口语7.0,平均分为(7.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.75,四舍五入后总分为7.0。注意总分按最接近的半分取整,.25向上取整,.75向上取整到下一个半分。

The table below shows approximate raw-score-to-band conversions for Academic Reading (these vary slightly between test versions):

下表为学术类阅读原始分与等级分的近似换算(不同场次略有浮动):

Band 等级分 Correct Answers 答对题数
9 39–40
8 35–38
7 30–34
6 23–29

10. Key Strategies for Success | 高效备考策略

Mastering the format alone is not enough—you need a targeted preparation plan. Here are evidence-based strategies that have helped thousands of candidates improve their scores.

仅熟悉题型还不够,你需要一套有针对性的备考计划。以下策略已帮助成千上万考生提升成绩,均有实证支撑。

Strategy 1: Practise under realistic conditions. Complete full timed mock tests using official Cambridge materials to build stamina and familiarity with the test interface (for computer-based candidates).

策略一:在真实条件下练习。使用剑桥官方教材进行限时全真模考,以增强耐力并熟悉考试界面(针对机考考生)。

Strategy 2: Focus on weak micro-skills. If you often lose marks on True/False/Not Given, drill that question type specifically. Targeted practice is far more efficient than doing random tests.

策略二:集中攻克薄弱微技能。如果你常在“对/错/未给出”题上失分,就专项练习该类题型。有针对性的训练远比盲目刷题高效得多。

Strategy 3: Use the one-minute preparation time wisely in Speaking Part 2. Jot down keywords and a simple structure—introduction, two key points, and a conclusion—rather than writing full sentences.

策略三:善用口语第二部分的一分钟准备时间。写下关键词和简单框架——引入、两个要点、结尾——而不是写完整句子。

Strategy 4: Build vocabulary in topic clusters. Learn words and collocations by theme (education, environment, technology, health) so you can quickly retrieve them during Writing and Speaking tasks.

策略四:按主题聚类积累词汇。按主题(教育、环境、科技、健康)学习单词和搭配,以便在写作和口语中快速提取使用。

Strategy 5: Review your errors systematically. Keep an error log that records why you missed each question—mishearing, misreading, false inference, or time pressure—then work on eliminating the most frequent cause first.

策略五:系统化复盘错误。建立错题记录,标明每道错题的原因——听错、读错、推断失误还是时间压力——然后优先消除最频繁的失分原因。

In summary, IELTS is a well-structured and predictable exam. By familiarising yourself with each module’s format, mastering the question types, and practising purposefully, you can approach the test with confidence and markedly improve your band score.

总而言之,雅思是一门结构清晰、可预测性强的考试。通过熟悉每个模块的题型、掌握解题方法并开展有目的的练习,你将能自信地走进考场,并显著提升自己的分数。
