📚 Price Elasticity of Supply Explained | A-Level
Price elasticity of supply (PES) measures how responsive the quantity supplied of a good is to a change in its price. It is a key concept in A-Level economics because it helps explain why some markets react quickly to price changes while others are slow to adjust.
1. What Is Price Elasticity of Supply? |
Price elasticity of supply is the percentage change in quantity supplied resulting from a percentage change in price. Because supply curves generally slope upward, PES is usually positive.
PES = % change in quantity supplied ÷ % change in price
The size of PES tells us how easy or difficult it is for producers to change output in response to price signals. A high PES means supply is flexible; a low PES means supply is rigid.
2. The PES Formula and Its Interpretation | PES
To calculate PES, we compare the percentage change in quantity supplied with the percentage change in price. The unit of measurement cancels out, so PES has no units.
PES = (ΔQs ÷ Qs) ÷ (ΔP ÷ P)
The Greek letter Δ (delta) means “a change in”. If price and quantity supplied move in the same direction, PES is greater than zero. For normal goods and services, this always happens because a higher price creates a stronger incentive to supply more.
When interpreting PES, remember that it measures responsiveness, not the actual change in output. Two goods with the same physical output change can have different PES values if their initial quantities differ.
3. Degrees of Elasticity of Supply |
In A-Level economics, we classify PES into five main cases. The most important distinction in exams is between elastic supply (PES > 1) and inelastic supply (PES < 1).
| PES = 0 | Perfectly inelastic; quantity supplied does not change at all.
