Across Period 3 (Na to Cl), the oxides change strikingly from strongly basic to amphoteric to strongly acidic. This trend is one of the most important examples of periodicity in CIE A-Level Chemistry, linking bonding, structure, and acid-base behaviour.

The main oxides commonly examined are Na₂O, MgO, Al₂O₃, SiO₂, P₄O₁₀, SO₂, SO₃ and Cl₂O₇. Argon does not form an ordinary oxide because it is a noble gas with a stable octet.
