📚 Cambridge International vs Oxford AQA vs Pearson Edexcel: Positioning Differences Between the Three Exam Boards | 剑桥国际、牛津AQA与培生爱思:三大考试局的定位差异

In most international schools, “A Level” is spoken about as if it were one qualification. In reality it is a family of qualifications awarded by different boards, each with its own syllabus, exam calendar, assessment model and grading mechanics. Two students can both hold “A Level Mathematics” and yet sit entirely different papers, in different months, under different resit rules. Understanding those differences is not academic trivia – it directly affects how much risk sits in a single exam session, how easily a student recovers from a bad paper, and how familiar the qualification looks to an admissions officer.

1. Why the Board Choice Matters More Than Families Expect |

The three boards operating at scale in international schools are Cambridge International (part of Cambridge University Press & Assessment), Oxford AQA (a joint venture between AQA and Oxford University Press) and Pearson Edexcel (part of Pearson plc). All three are recognised by UCAS and by universities worldwide, and all three carry the same UCAS tariff points at the same grades. The differences lie elsewhere: in structure, in exam frequency, and in the culture of assessment each board promotes.

A linear board asks a student to perform on one set of papers at the end of two years. A modular board lets that student split the same content into units and resit the weak ones. That single structural fact changes revision planning, stress management and even the subjects a student dares to take.

2. The Three Boards at a Glance |

The table below summarises the positioning of each board before we examine the details. Treat it as a map, not a verdict – the “best” board depends on the student and the school.

3. Cambridge International: Scale, Linearity and Curriculum Ownership |

Cambridge International is the board most international schools meet first. It owns both the curriculum and the assessment, which is why its syllabuses, teacher guides and Cambridge University Press textbooks fit together so tightly. Global consistency is a deliberate design feature: the same paper is sat worldwide in the same session, so a grade means roughly the same thing in Nairobi, Shanghai and Dubai.

Cambridge A Level is linear. All written papers are normally taken at the end of the two-year course, although students may sit AS Level at the end of Year 12 and carry those marks forward within a limited window instead of continuing immediately to A2. This rewards long-term retention and punishes last-minute cramming – there is no unit to resit in January.

Two further Cambridge features matter. First, the AICE Diploma: a group award that requires a spread of subjects including Global Perspectives & Research, mathematics, a science and a language, which some US universities value as evidence of breadth. Second, Cambridge’s science practicals are examined directly, with a written “alternative to practical” route for centres without laboratory capacity.
