📚 GCSE 9-1 Grading Explained: How the New Scale Works and How It Compares to A*-G | GCSE 9
Since 2017, GCSE qualifications in England have been graded from 9 down to 1 instead of from A* down to G, and more than eight years on the change still puzzles students, parents and even some teachers. This guide explains what the numerical scale actually measures, how each new grade lines up against the old letters, how your final grade is calculated from raw marks and grade boundaries, and what grade 4, grade 5 and grade 9 really mean when you apply for sixth form, college or an apprenticeship.
1. What the 9-1 Scale Actually Is | 9-1 评分制到底是什么
The 9-1 scale is a numerical grading system used for GCSEs in England, with grade 9 as the highest and grade 1 as the lowest. It was designed to replace the letters A* to G with numbers, but the reform added one extra level of differentiation at the very top, so the new scale has nine graded points rather than eight.
Grades are awarded as whole numbers only – there is no grade 7.5 or 8.3. A candidate who does not reach the standard required for grade 1 is recorded as U, which stands for ungraded. U is not a grade, it is the absence of a grade, and it still exists under the old system too.
The reform was not only about labels. Alongside the new numbers, GCSEs in England moved from modular units with several exam sittings to linear courses assessed at the end of two years, most coursework was removed or reduced, and controlled assessment was largely replaced by exams.
2. The Old A*-G System: What Changed and Why | 旧 A*-G 评分制:改革缘由
The A*-G system had been in place since 1988, when O-levels and CSEs were merged into a single GCSE. Its weakness was that too many candidates clustered at the top: in some subjects more than a quarter of entries earned a grade A or A*, so the letters did little to distinguish between an average top-set student and an exceptional one.
There was also a long-running political argument that grade C had become a blunt pass or fail line. Employers, colleges and universities all treated C as the threshold, which meant the difference between a low C and a high C was invisible on paper even though the gap in performance might be large.
The new scale therefore does two things at once: it spreads candidates out more evenly across the grades, and it creates a clearer middle band (grades 4, 5 and 6) where most of the pass-line arguments now happen.
3. The Full Comparison Table: 9-1 vs A*-G | 完整对照表:9-1 与 A*-G
The table below is the widely used mapping between the two scales. It is an approximate alignment of standards, not a mathematical conversion – a student who would have earned a B under the old system does not automatically receive a 6 under the new one, because the papers and the grade boundaries are different.
| New grade | Old grade | What it signals |
| 9 | Above A* | The very top of the cohort | 高于 A*,仅授予最顶尖的考生 |
| 8 | A* | Strong A* performance | 相当于 A* 水平 |
| 7 | A | Solid A grade | 相当于 A |
| 6 | B | Good B, comfortably above the pass line | 相当于 B,明显高于及格线 |
| 5 | Top of C / low B | “Strong pass” used in some school measures | “强及格”,部分学校考核采用 |
| 4 | Bottom of C | “Standard pass” – the common threshold | “标准及格”,最常用的门槛 |
| 3 | D / top of E | Below the pass line |
| 2 | F / top of E | Weak performance across the paper |
| 1 | G | Lowest grade that can be awarded |
| U | U | Ungraded, below grade 1 |
Two details in this table matter more than the rest. First, the top of the old scale has been stretched: A* splits into 8 and 9, so grade 9 has no direct older equivalent. Second, the middle of the scale has been compressed into a decision zone around 4 and 5, which is where most school, college and employer requirements sit.
4. Why Grade 9 Is Not Simply an A* | 为什么 9 分不等于 A*
When Ofqual designed the new scale, it explicitly stated that grade 9 should not be a simple relabelling of A*. The regulator’s rule was that grade 9 would be awarded to roughly the top 20% of candidates who achieve grade 7 or above in a subject – that is, the top fifth of the old A and A* group.
In practice this means the proportion of grade 9s in a subject is small. Across all GCSE entries in England in a typical recent summer, roughly 4% to 5% of entries are awarded grade 9, and in demanding subjects such as mathematics or the sciences the figure can be lower still. Grade 8 is therefore the true successor of A*: it covers the bulk of the old A* population.
The practical consequence is that top-grade conversations have changed. A student with seven grade 8s and one grade 9 is not “one A* short of perfect” – the two grades sit at genuinely different standards, and selective sixth forms increasingly look at the count of 8s and 9s separately.
5. Grade 4 vs Grade 5: The “Pass” Debate | 4
Ofqual anchored grade 4 at the standard of the lower part of the old grade C, and placed grade 5 between C and B – broadly the top third of a C and the bottom third of a B. Both grades are passes, but they are used very differently.
Grade 4 is the “standard pass”. It is the level the government uses for the requirement that students who have not reached it in English and mathematics must continue studying those subjects after 16. It is also the grade most commonly quoted by colleges and employers when they say “a grade 4 or above in English and maths”.
Grade 5 is the “strong pass”. School performance tables publish both the percentage of pupils achieving 4+ and 5+ in English and mathematics, and many selective sixth forms, grammar schools and competitive apprenticeship schemes quote 5 or above as their entry baseline. In a typical year, roughly two-thirds of GCSE entries reach grade 4 or above, while only about half reach grade 5 or above.
For a student, the safest reading is this: grade 4 keeps the door open, grade 5 makes you competitive, and grade 6 or above removes the question entirely for most academic routes.
6. Foundation and Higher Tier: Which Grades Are Available |
Several GCSE subjects are tiered, which means you sit either a Foundation tier paper or a Higher tier paper. Tiering survives the 9-1 reform and is one of the most common sources of confusion, because the grades available to you depend on the paper you sit, not on how hard you work.
(Foundation)
