📚 IELTS Academic in 2 Hours 45 Minutes: Four Papers, Structure and Time Allocation | 雅思学术类2小时45分钟:四科结构与时间分配
IELTS Academic is officially described as a 2 hour 45 minute examination, and that single number conceals four very different papers, each with its own rhythm, its own traps and its own clock. Understanding exactly where those minutes go – and how many seconds you can realistically afford per question – is one of the fastest ways to raise your band score, because most candidates do not lose marks through weak English. They lose marks because they run out of time.
雅思学术类考试官方给出的总时长是2小时45分钟,而这一个数字背后,藏着四份节奏不同、陷阱不同、计时方式也完全不同的试卷。弄清楚这些时间究竟花在哪里,以及每道题你实际能负担多少秒,是提分最快的途径之一——因为大多数考生失分并不是因为英语不好,而是因为时间不够用。
1. The 2 Hours 45 Minutes at a Glance | 2小时45分钟全景一览
IELTS Academic has four papers: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken back to back in one sitting with no break at all. Speaking is normally scheduled on the same day, or within seven days before or after the written papers.
雅思学术类共四份试卷:听力、阅读、写作和口语。听力、阅读和写作在同一场次中连续进行,中间完全没有休息。口语通常安排在笔试当天,或在笔试前后七天之内完成。
The arithmetic behind the headline figure is simple:
这个总时长背后的算术其实很简单:
30 + 60 + 60 + 14 = 164 minutes ≈ 2 hours 45 minutes
On the paper-based test you also spend up to 10 extra minutes transferring Listening answers onto the answer sheet, so the morning actually runs to roughly 2 hours 55 minutes of clock time. On computer-delivered IELTS that window shrinks to 2 minutes, because you type answers directly into the screen.
纸笔考试中,你还需要额外最多10分钟把听力答案誊写到答题卡上,因此上午的实际时钟时间约为2小时55分钟。机考中这个环节缩短为2分钟,因为答案是直接输入屏幕的。
| Paper | Time | Questions / Tasks | Format |
| Listening | 30 min + 10 min transfer (paper) or 2 min check (computer) | 40 | 4 parts, played once only |
| Reading | 60 min | 40 | 3 long passages, no extra transfer time |
| Writing | 60 min | 2 tasks | Task 1 = 150 words, Task 2 = 250 words |
| Speaking | 11-14 min | 3 parts | Face-to-face with a certified examiner |
Notice one crucial asymmetry: Listening gives you a transfer window, Reading does not. In Reading, the answer you write on the answer sheet in minute 59 is the answer that counts. Nothing can be moved afterwards.
请注意一个关键的不对称:听力有誊写时间,阅读没有。在阅读中,你在第59分钟写在答题卡上的答案才算数,之后没有任何补救机会。
2. Listening: 30 Minutes of Audio Plus Transfer | 听力:30分钟音频加誊写
Listening is the shortest paper but the least forgiving, because the recording is played once and never repeated. There are four parts, ten questions each, forty in total. The contexts move from everyday social situations in Parts 1 and 2 to academic situations in Parts 3 and 4.
听力是最短的一份试卷,却也是最不留情的一份,因为录音只播放一次,绝不重播。听力共四个部分,每部分10题,总计40题。场景从第1、2部分的日常社交情境,逐步过渡到第3、4部分的学术情境。
The average time per question is:
平均每题的可用时间是:
30 minutes ÷ 40 questions = 45 seconds per question
That average is misleading, because you do not control the pace – the recording does. Your genuine time budget consists of the pause before each part and the short gap in the middle of the part, which is precisely when strong candidates read ahead.
但这个平均值具有误导性,因为节奏不由你控制,而是由录音控制。你真正的时间预算,是每部分开始前的停顿,以及部分中间那段短暂的空档——高分考生正是在这些时刻提前读题。
| Part | Context | Speakers | Typical Answers |
| 1 | Everyday social transaction | Two | Names, numbers, dates, prices |
| 2 | Everyday monologue, e.g. a guided tour | One | Places, times, facilities |
| 3 | Academic discussion, e.g. a tutorial | Two to three | Attitudes, reasons, opinions |
| 4 | Academic lecture | One | Definitions, causes, effects |
Timing strategy for Listening is therefore not about speed but about anticipation. Use every second of the pre-part pause to underline the key word in each question, and predict what kind of answer is coming – a number, a noun, a verb.
因此听力的时间策略与速度无关,而与预判有关。请利用每部分开始前的每一秒,划出题干中的关键词,并预判即将出现的答案类型——是数字、名词还是动词。
- Write on the question paper as you listen, then transfer. Never try to write a final answer and listen at the same time. | 边听边写在试题册上,之后再誊写。不要试图在听的同时写出最终答案。
- If you miss one answer, abandon it immediately. Two missed answers are worse than one. | 如果漏掉一题,立刻放弃它。漏两题比漏一题糟糕得多。
- Check spelling, singular and plural endings, and the word limit instruction, such as ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER. | 检查拼写、单复数词尾,以及字数限制指令,例如 ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER。
- In the transfer window, do not rewrite answers that are already correct. Spend the time on the ones you are unsure about. | 在誊写阶段,不要把已经正确的答案重抄一遍。把时间留给不确定的题目。
3. Reading: 60 Minutes With No Safety Net | 阅读:60分钟,没有安全网
Reading is three long passages and forty questions in exactly 60 minutes, with no extra transfer time at the end. That single fact reshapes the entire strategy: you must write your answers onto the answer sheet as you go, or in short blocks, never at the very end.
阅读是3篇长文章、40道题,严格限定在60分钟内,结束后没有额外的誊写时间。这一个事实重塑了整个策略:你必须在做题过程中、或分小段
