📚 IELTS Enquiry on Results (EOR): How to Apply and When It Is Worth It | 雅思成绩复议的申请方式与适用情形
Every IELTS candidate has seen a score that felt wrong. You finished both Writing tasks, wrote over 250 words for Task 2, spoke fluently for fourteen minutes – and still received a Writing band 5.5 when your Reading is 8.0. The official route for challenging that result is the Enquiry on Results, usually shortened to EOR, and in Chinese it is known as chengji fuyi This guide explains exactly what an EOR is, who is eligible, which situations justify the fee, how to apply through a test centre or an online portal for both paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS, how long the process takes, and how it compares with the newer One Skill Retake option.
1. What an Enquiry on Results Actually Is | 复议的性质与边界
An Enquiry on Results is a formal request for your test performance to be assessed a second time by senior IELTS examiners. It is not a customer complaint, not a challenge to the integrity of the test centre, and not a negotiation. It is a paid quality-control procedure that exists because Writing and Speaking are judged by human examiners, and human judgements can vary slightly at the boundary between two half-bands.
The most important technical detail is that the re-marking is blind. The senior examiner who reviews your work does not see the original band scores, the original examiner’s comments, or your identity. The assessment is made against exactly the same public band descriptors that were used the first time, so nothing about the process is designed to produce a particular outcome.
For Listening and Reading, the procedure is different in nature. These are objective tests with a fixed answer key, so an EOR is not a re-reading of your judgement – it is a clerical and technical check that all answers were counted, that the answer sheet was transferred correctly, and that the raw-score-to-band conversion was applied properly. This distinction shapes every strategic decision later in this article.
2. Eligibility: Which Tests and Skills Can Be Reviewed |
EOR is available for the mainstream IELTS products. You can apply for IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, and the UKVI versions of both, whether you sat the paper-based or the computer-delivered format. You may request a review of all four skills at once, or only one, two or three of them.
There are clear exclusions. IELTS Life Skills (A1, A2, B1) is not eligible for an Enquiry on Results because it is a pass/fail test rather than a banded one. Scores that have already been through a completed EOR are final and cannot be reviewed again. You also cannot apply on behalf of another candidate – the request must come from the registered test taker, or from a legally authorised representative in documented cases.
One structural limit is worth remembering: you can only open one EOR per test. You cannot send a second request after the first has been decided, and you cannot “top up” an EOR by adding another skill halfway through the process. If you only review Writing, you cannot later change your mind and ask for Speaking to be checked as well.
3. Deadlines and Fees |
The universal deadline is six weeks – 42 days – from your test date. The clock starts on the test day itself, not on the day results are released, so a candidate who waits three weeks for a university decision before acting has already lost half the window. Some test centres accept applications slightly later at their discretion, but you must never plan on it.
The fee varies by country and by test centre. It is normally a significant sum, so the refund rule matters a great deal: if any requested skill receives a higher band after the review, the EOR fee is refunded in full. If the scores stay the same, the fee is not returned. This means an unsuccessful EOR leaves you paying the fee and still needing to test again.
| Chinese mainland 中国大陆 | IELTS China online portal / test centre | approx. RMB 1,400 | Full refund if any score increases |
| Hong Kong 香港 | British Council / IDP online form | approx. HKD 1,000 | Refunded if score increases |
| United Kingdom 英国 | British Council candidate portal | approx. GBP 120 | Refunded if score increases |
| Australia 澳大利亚 | IDP / IELTS Australia portal | approx. AUD 200+ | Refunded if score increases |
These figures are indicative only and change periodically. Always confirm the current fee, payment method and deadline on the official IELTS website for your country before you pay. If the review finds that the test centre made an administrative error – for example, answers that were never scanned – the correction is made at no cost and the EOR fee is returned.
4. Situations Where an EOR Is Worth Applying For | 适合申请复议的情形
The strongest case for an EOR is a large, unexplained gap between your productive skills and your receptive skills. If your Listening and Reading are 7.5 and 8.0 but Writing is 5.5, that pattern is unusual enough that a review is a reasonable use of money. Examiners are trained to be consistent, but a 2.0-band internal gap is exactly the kind of outlier that re-marking exists to catch.
Second, an EOR makes sense when a single half-band is all that stands between you and a concrete outcome. A university offer of 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, and your Writing is 5.5 – that 0.5 is worth the fee. Re-marking is most likely to move a score that sits on the boundary between two bands, and boundary scores are precisely where conditional offers are decided.
Third, consider an EOR if your score dropped sharply compared with recent, credible evidence of your level: a previous official IELTS result, or a series of consistently marked mock tests under timed conditions. A sudden one-band fall with no change in preparation is not proof of an error, but it is a legitimate reason to ask for a second opinion.
- Writing or Speaking 1.0+ below your other two skills |
- You need exactly 0.5 more in one skill for an offer |
- A sharp drop versus a previous official attempt |
- You completed both tasks, met the word count and managed time well | 两篇作文均完成、字数达标、时间控制良好
- The score is on the boundary (e.g. 6.25-style averages) |
5. Situations Where an EOR Is Usually Not Worth It | 通常不建议复议的情形
Do not spend the fee on Listening or Reading unless you have a specific, concrete suspicion. Because these sections are objectively marked, an EOR only checks whether your answers were counted and converted correctly. If you know you misread a heading-matching set, or you ran out of time on the final passage, the clerical check will simply confirm the original score.
Do not apply if you need a jump of more than one band. The purpose of a re-mark is to correct a small misjudgement at a boundary, not to reposition a script that was clearly off-topic, under length, or largely incoherent. A Task 2 answer written in 180 words, or one that ignored the question, will be confirmed as a low band by any competent examiner.
Speed is the other decisive factor. A paper-based EOR can take six to eight weeks, while a new test can often be booked and completed faster. If your application deadline is in five weeks, an EOR is a gamble, not a plan. In that scenario a One Skill Retake, or a full retake, is the more rational route.
Finally, remember that an EOR can, in principle, leave a score unchanged or even lower it. Decreases are rare, but the rule exists and you accept it when you apply. If your score is already exactly what you need for your target institution, there is no benefit in reopening it.
6. How to Apply: Paper-Based IELTS |
For a paper-based test, the application route depends on where you sat the exam, but the steps are consistent. Start by logging into the candidate account you used to register – in Chinese mainland this is the IELTS China registration portal – and look for the Enquiry on Results or score review option next to your result. Select the skills you want reviewed, confirm the fee, and pay online.
If your centre does not offer an online EOR service, download the official Enquiry on Results application form from the test centre or British Council / IDP website for your country. Complete every field: full name as printed on your passport, candidate number, test report form (TRF) number, test date, test centre name, and the specific skills requested. Sign it by hand and submit it by the method stated – usually email with a scanned attachment, or in person at the centre.
Whichever route you take, keep evidence. Save the payment receipt, the confirmation
