IELTS Life Skills is the shortest and most specialised test in the IELTS family. It exists for one clear purpose: to show UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that you can understand and use everyday spoken English. There is no reading paper, no writing paper, no 0-9 band score and no academic lecture. You sit in a room with one examiner and one other candidate, and everything happens inside a single window of 16 to 22 minutes.

1. What IELTS Life Skills Is and Who Needs It | 什么是雅思生活技能类考试及适用人群

IELTS Life Skills tests Speaking and Listening only. It is designed for people who must prove to UKVI that their English is good enough for a family visa, an extension of a family visa, or settlement and citizenship. Because it is a visa test rather than an academic test, the language is everyday language: home, work, shopping, travel, health, plans and opinions.

雅思生活技能类只考口语和听力。它面向需要向 UKVI 证明英语水平足以申请家庭签证、续签家庭签证，或申请永居与入籍的人。由于它是签证类考试而非学术考试，考查的语言都是日常语言：家庭、工作、购物、出行、健康、计划与观点。

The test is delivered face to face at UKVI-approved test centres, and it is the only IELTS product that is not scored on the nine-band scale. You either pass at the level you entered for, or you do not.

2. The Three Levels: A1, A2 and B1 | 三个级别：A1、A2 与 B1

Life Skills comes in three levels, and each level matches a specific immigration route. Choosing the wrong level is one of the most expensive mistakes a candidate can make, because a Pass at A2 will not satisfy a B1 requirement.

生活技能类分为三个级别，每个级别对应特定的移民路径。选错级别是考生最”昂贵”的错误之一，因为 A2 的通过结果无法满足 B1 的要求。

• A1: the entry level, usually required for an initial family or partner visa application.

• A2: usually required when a family visa is extended after the first period of leave.

• B1: the highest of the three, usually required for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) and for citizenship.

The higher the level, the more you are expected to do with the same three tasks: longer answers, clearer reasons, more independent discussion and fewer requests for repetition.

The total test time depends on the level. The three tasks run continuously with no break, and the examiner manages the clock.
