📚 IELTS on Computer Technical Failure: Raising Your Hand and Getting a Rescheduled Test |
A frozen screen, a dead keyboard, a headset that crackles in the middle of a Listening question – technical failures in IELTS on computer are rare, but they do happen. What separates candidates who recover calmly from candidates who lose marks is simple: knowing the official procedure before the invigilator reaches your desk.
1. What Counts as a Technical Failure |
Not every small annoyance is a technical failure. A page that loads a second slowly, a screen that flickers once, or a mouse wheel that feels stiff but still works is normally not logged as an incident, and no compensation follows.
A genuine failure is one that stops you from answering: the screen freezes completely, the cursor disappears, the audio cuts out mid-sentence, the keyboard stops registering letters, or the system logs you out of the test.
| 是否记录 | What to do | 你应该做什么 |
| Screen frozen for more than 10 seconds | 屏幕卡死超过10秒 | Yes | 是 | Raise hand, touch nothing | 举手,不要碰任何东西 |
| Audio drops out in Listening | 听力音频中断 | Yes | 是 | Raise hand, note the question number | 举手,记下题号 |
| System logs you out | 系统把你登出 | Yes | 是 | Raise hand, stay seated | 举手,留在座位上 |
| Mouse stiff but still clicking | 鼠标涩但仍能点击 | No | 否 | Keep answering, report after | 继续作答,考后再反馈 |
| Page loads slowly for 2 seconds | 页面慢2秒 | No | 否 | Wait quietly | 静静等待 |
The distinction matters because only a logged incident can lead to extra time, a rescheduled test or a refund. If you stay silent and battle on with a faulty device, the system records nothing, and the test centre owes you nothing.
2. The First 60 Seconds: Raise Your Hand |
The moment you realise something is wrong, stop typing and raise your hand high above your head. Keep your other hand away from the keyboard and the mouse. Do not shout, do not stand up, and do not turn round to talk to the candidate next to you.
Never try to fix the computer yourself. Pressing the power button, closing the browser window, refreshing the page or unplugging the headset can wipe your answers and destroy the evidence the centre needs in order to log the incident.
While you wait, look at the on-screen timer and memorise roughly how much time is left. That single number is the most useful information you can give the invigilator, and it is also the number you will quote later if you need to follow up.
3. What the Invigilator Will Do | 监考员会做什么
The invigilator will come to your desk quietly, ask you to describe the problem, and look at your screen. In most centres they will first try a soft recovery: unlocking the screen, re-entering your candidate number, or restarting the test application without shutting down the whole computer.
If that does not work, you may be moved to a spare workstation. Your answers are normally stored on the centre’s server, so a move usually costs you seconds rather than minutes – but always check the last question you answered after you log in again.
Everything is written into an incident report, including the time, the workstation number and what happened. Ask for
