Old or New Transcript After a Single-Subject Resit: Which One to Use, and When | 单科重考后新旧成绩单自由选择:什么时候用哪一份

📚 Old or New Transcript After a Single-Subject Resit: Which One to Use, and When | 单科重考后新旧成绩单自由选择:什么时候用哪一份

Every results season, thousands of A-Level and IGCSE candidates sit a single-subject resit and then discover that they now hold two pieces of paper for the same qualification: an old certificate and a new one. The assumption is often that the newest document automatically replaces the old, or that a higher second attempt becomes the “real” grade. Neither assumption is safe. Whether you use the old result or the new one depends on whether your qualification is linear or modular, on how your board aggregates marks, on when each certificate was issued, and on what the receiving university or visa authority actually asks for.

1. Align the Vocabulary First | 先把术语对齐:重考、成绩单、证书

Three words are constantly confused in this conversation, and the confusion creates real mistakes. A “resit” means entering again for a component or qualification you have already sat and certificated. A “retake” is the same thing said more loosely. “Carry forward” is a completely different mechanism: it means an earlier unit or AS result is transferred into a later assessment series by the board, without you sitting that part again.

The second confusion is between a “statement of results” and a “certificate”. The statement of results is the provisional slip issued on results day; it shows component-level or unit-level marks. The certificate is the formal, permanent document issued weeks later, and it usually shows only the final subject grade and the series in which it was awarded.

Finally, “transcript” is a mainly North American term. UK boards such as Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford AQA issue certificates and statements of results, not transcripts. When a university abroad asks for an “official transcript”, what they normally accept is a board-issued statement of results or a certified confirmation of results, plus your school’s own academic record.

最后,”transcript(成绩单/成绩档案)”主要是北美说法。

  • Carry forward /
  • Statement of Results /

2. The Harsh Rule: Boards Certify by Series, Not by Person |

This is the single most important fact in the whole article. An awarding body does not maintain one evolving record of your “best ever” result. It certifies results series by series. Sit May/June, you get a May/June certificate. Sit again in October/November, you get an October/November certificate. Nothing on the second document cancels the first.

The only routine exception is modular qualifications, where a board may issue an aggregated overall grade in the series in which you “cash in” the qualification. Even then, the aggregation happens inside one series – the board combines the unit marks that are valid and available at that point, and issues one overall grade for that series.

One Series → One Certificate → One Set of Certified Grades

So “choosing between the old and the new transcript” is not about editing a file. It is about deciding which certificate you present as evidence of the grade you hold, and – in modular systems – about when you trigger the aggregation in the first place.

3. Linear Qualifications: Cambridge, Oxford AQA, AQA and OCR | 线性资格:剑桥、牛津 AQA、AQA、OCR

Cambridge International AS & A Level, Oxford AQA International A Level, and the UK domestic AQA and OCR A Levels are linear. There are no unit resits in the ordinary sense. If you want a different grade, you re-enter for the whole qualification and sit every paper again in a later series.

剑桥国际 AS & A Level、牛津 AQA 国际 A Level,以及英国本土的 AQA、OCR A Level 都属于线性资格。

This gives you something close to a genuine free choice. Suppose you held a B from May/June, resat the whole subject in October/November, and achieved a C. The B certificate remains completely valid. It has not been withdrawn, downgraded or superseded. You may present the B certificate, because it is a true statement of a grade you were awarded.

One narrow exception is Cambridge’s AS carry-forward rule. An AS Level result may normally be carried forward into a later A Level series within a defined window (13 months). If you choose that route, your A2 papers stay as they were and only the carried AS mark is reused – which means you are not honestly “retaking the whole subject”.

AS carry forward: valid for 13 months from the AS series

  • Higher resit grade → normally present the new certificate. /
  • Lower resit grade → the old certificate is still valid and usable. /
  • Same grade → use whichever series fits your deadline better. /

4. Modular Qualifications: Pearson Edexcel IAL and the Unit Bank | 模块化资格:培生爱德思 IAL 与”单元库”

Pearson Edexcel International A Level is modular. You sit units, unit marks are banked, and you must “cash in” to receive an overall A Level grade. The overall grade appears only in the series where the cash-in is made. This is where the phrase “freely choose which transcript to use” becomes technically meaningful.

Two consequences follow. First, you can delay the cash-in until your unit profile looks the way you want, which effectively lets you control which combination of marks becomes the certified grade. Second, if you later improve a unit by resitting, you can cash in again in a subsequent series, producing a new certificate with a new overall grade.

Here you must check your specification, because boards differ on which attempt feeds the aggregation. Some modular rules use the best available unit mark; others use the most recent attempt. That difference decides whether a disappointing resit is harmless or actively damaging.

Certified Grade = aggregation of the unit marks accepted in the series of cash-in (board rules apply)

Resit improved the unit and you cashed in again / 重考提高单元分并重新结算 New certificate / 新证书
Resit did not change the overall grade / 重考未改变总等级 Either certificate; use the earlier series if deadlines are tight / 两者皆可;截止紧就用更早那次
Resit made the aggregation worse / 重考使合并结果变差 Speak to your exams officer immediately; the earlier cash-in may still be your certified grade / 立刻联系考务老师;更早的结算可能仍是你的正式等级

5. When the Old Result Is the Right One to Use |

Use the earlier certificate when it carries the higher – or at least equal – grade and the receiving institution is checking a threshold rather than a progression narrative. Universities verify that you hold “A Level Mathematics at grade A”, not that you hold “the most recent A Level Mathematics result”.

This matters most in three situations. First, when your resit went badly and the new certificate is weaker. Second, when your conditional offer has already been met by the old result and the new series results arrive too late to change anything. Third, when the old certificate is the one your school has already submitted or the one already quoted in a university portal, and a change would trigger a verification query you do not need.

There is one absolute limit. You may choose which certificate to present; you may not deny that a resit took place when you are explicitly asked. UCAS applications and many university forms ask whether you have resat a qualification. Answer truthfully. Presenting the stronger certificate while accurately disclosing that you also sat a later series is entirely legitimate; concealing the later attempt is not.
