📚 Student Finance for Adult Learners in the UK: What Funding You Can Get and How to Apply |

Returning to study as an adult in the UK is far more affordable than most people assume, because the student finance system in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland treats mature learners in much the same way as school leavers. A tuition fee loan covers your fees in full, a maintenance loan helps with rent and living costs, and a set of non-repayable grants is reserved specifically for students who have children, dependants or a disability. This guide explains who counts as an adult student, what each type of funding is worth, which rules catch people out, and exactly how to apply step by step.

Note on figures: all amounts below are indicative maxima for the 2025/26 academic year in England. Rates are uprated annually and differ across the four UK nations, so always confirm the current numbers on gov.uk or your national student finance body before you plan your budget.

1. Who Counts as an Adult Student |

Universities and UCAS generally describe anyone starting an undergraduate course at 21 or over as a mature student. Student finance itself does not use the word “mature” at all. Instead, it asks one question that changes everything: are you a dependent or an independent student? Your answer determines whose income is assessed when your maintenance loan is calculated.

You are treated as an independent student from the start of the academic year in which you turn 25. You are also independent if you are married or in a civil partnership, have a child, have no living parents, are estranged from your family, are a care leaver, or can show you have supported yourself financially for three years before the course began.

The practical effect is simple: as an independent student, your parents’ income is irrelevant. Only your own income is assessed, plus that of a spouse or partner if you have one. This is often the single biggest financial advantage adult learners have over 18-year-olds.

2. Tuition Fee Loans: The Foundation of Your Funding |

The Tuition Fee Loan is the backbone of student finance. It is not means-tested, it has no upper age limit, and it is paid directly to your university in three instalments across the year, so the money never passes through your bank account. You do not pay anything upfront, and you can apply for it regardless of your household income.

For a full-time undergraduate course in England in 2025/26, the maximum Tuition Fee Loan is £9,535, which matches the fee cap that universities may charge UK “home” students. If your course costs less than the cap, the loan simply covers the actual fee.

Part-time students are also covered as long as the course intensity is at least 25% of an equivalent full-time course. The maximum part-time Tuition Fee Loan is proportionate to the full-time cap, currently just over £7,000 for a course studied at a typical part-time intensity.

Tuition Fee Loan (2025/26, England, full-time) = up to £9,535, paid directly to the university, not means-tested

3. Maintenance Loans: Money for Rent, Food and Travel |

The Maintenance Loan is designed to cover living costs and is paid into your own bank account. Unlike the Tuition Fee Loan, it is means-tested for dependent students and its maximum depends on where you live while studying. Adult students who are independent are assessed only on their own income, which usually means a far larger loan than a school leaver with working parents would receive.

Living situation (2025/26, England, indicative maximum) Maximum Maintenance Loan
Living away from home, studying outside London £10,544
Living away from home, studying in London £13,762
Living at home with parents or relatives £8,877
Part-time course at 25% intensity Pro rata, roughly 25% of the full-time rate

The money arrives in three instalments, normally at the start of each term, and only after your university confirms you have registered. Many adult learners use the first instalment to cover a deposit and the first month’s rent, so applying early matters enormously.

4. Household Income and the Income Taper |

For a dependent student, the Maintenance Loan is reduced as household income rises. For an independent student aged 25 or over, that household is simply you, plus a spouse or partner if applicable. The assessment starts at a threshold of roughly £25,000 and the loan falls gradually above that point, reaching a much lower base rate at a household income of roughly £58,000 to £60,000.

Maintenance Loan = Maximum rate − income taper on household income above the threshold

In practice the taper runs at roughly 19.5p for every £1 of household income above the threshold, although the exact rate is reset each year. You will be asked to provide evidence such as a P60, a Self Assessment tax return, or payslips, and if you are married you must submit your partner’s income too. Failing to supply this evidence is the single most common reason for a delayed first payment.
