T Level Industry Placement Preparation: What Students Must Do Before Day One | T Level

📚 T Level Industry Placement Preparation: What Students Must Do Before Day One | T Level

A T Level is not simply a classroom qualification. Its defining feature is a substantial industry placement with a real employer, and for most students that placement is the most exciting and the most intimidating part of the whole programme. Good preparation is what separates a placement where you learn genuine occupational skills from one where you spend six weeks making tea and feeling lost.

This guide sets out exactly what you should do before your first day, in what order, and which official and free resources are genuinely worth your time. It is written for students on all T Level routes – Digital, Health and Science, Engineering and Manufacturing, Construction, Education and Childcare, Business and Administration, Legal, Finance and Accounting, Catering and Hospitality, Hair and Beauty, Agriculture, Protective Services, Sales and Marketing, and Transport and Logistics.

1. What a T Level Industry Placement Actually Is | T Level

The industry placement is a mandatory, timetabled part of every T Level. The legal minimum is 315 hours, which most providers describe as roughly 45 working days. It usually represents around 20 per cent of the whole two-year programme, and it must be completed with an external employer rather than with your school or college.

315 hours ÷ 7 hours per day ≈ 45 days ≈ 20% of the programme

The placement must be relevant to your occupational specialism. A Digital student should expect to work on real software, data or infrastructure tasks; a Health and Science student should expect to work in a clinical, laboratory or care setting with genuine patient or sample-facing routines. The placement is not graded like an exam, but completing it is required to be awarded the full T Level certificate, so treat it as a pass-or-fail component.

One point that surprises many students and parents: T Level placements are unpaid. They are learning placements, not jobs, and there is no employment contract. Many employers do reimburse travel or lunch costs, and your provider can often help with travel costs through the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund, so always ask before assuming you cannot afford to attend.

2. The 12-Week Countdown: A Practical Preparation Timeline | 12

Most students lose their first two weeks on placement simply because they left everything to the last minute. Working backwards from your start date gives you a much calmer launch. The table below is a workable default; adjust it to your provider’s own deadlines.

Weeks 12-10
Confirm your placement employer and dates in writing with your placement officer. Ask which occupational specialism tasks you will be able to evidence.
Weeks 9-8
Read the placement agreement and code of conduct. Note the dress code, start and finish times, and reporting line.
Weeks 7-6
Start any DBS application, occupational health form or sector card process immediately – these are the slowest items.
Weeks 5-4
Practise your travel route at the same time of day. Check the cost and apply for bursary support if needed.
Weeks 3-2
Write your SMART objectives with your tutor. Set up your evidence log and agree how weekly reviews will work.
Week 1
Re-read your induction pack, confirm your first-day contact and arrival time, and pack your kit the night before.

3. Paperwork, ID and Compliance: Get the Admin Right Early |

Administrative delays are the single most common reason placements start late or get cancelled. Employers cannot let you onto a site or into a clinical area without the correct records, and no amount of enthusiasm will override a missing document.

Before your start date you should expect to supply or receive the following:

  • Photo ID (passport or birth certificate plus proof of address) |
  • National Insurance number and, where relevant, right-to-work documentation |
  • A signed industry placement agreement between you, your provider and the employer |
  • A signed code of conduct, confidentiality agreement and data protection statement |
  • Emergency contact details, allergy and medication information |
  • Any sector card, licence or certificate required by the employer |

Read every document before you sign it. The placement agreement normally states the hours, the location, the supervision arrangements and the expenses policy. If something is unclear – particularly who your day-to-day supervisor will be – ask your placement officer in writing so there is a record.

4. Health, Safety and Safeguarding for Under-18s | 健康、安全与保护:未成年人适用规则

Because almost all T Level students are aged 16 to 19, employers must treat you as a young person under health and safety law. That means a specific young person’s risk assessment must be completed before your first day, taking into account your inexperience, your lack of maturity and any training you have not yet had.

Your working hours are also legally limited. The standard limits for under-18s in England are:

≤ 8 hours per day • ≤ 40 hours per week • ≥ 12 hours rest between shifts • 30-minute break after 4.5 hours

Night work between 10pm and 6am is generally prohibited for under-18s, with narrow exceptions in sectors such as hospitality, agriculture and healthcare. If your placement rota seems to breach these limits, raise it with your placement officer before you agree to it, not afterwards.

On your first day, make sure you can answer these questions without guessing:

  • Where is the nearest fire exit and assembly point? |
  • Who is the first aider, and where is the first aid kit? |
  • How do I report an accident, a near miss or a hazard? |
  • What personal protective equipment do I need, and where is it stored? |
  • Who is the designated safeguarding lead, and how do I contact them?

5. DBS Checks, Occupational Health and Sector Clearance | DBS

Some sectors require checks that take weeks to process, and they cannot be rushed. Start these the moment your placement is confirmed.

In Health and Science, Education and Childcare, and some Protective Services settings, you will normally need an enhanced DBS check, sometimes with a children’s or adults’ barred list check. Your provider usually initiates this, but you must supply accurate address history for the last five years – gaps or errors cause delays and rejections.

NHS and care placements frequently require occupational health clearance, including immunisation status for conditions such as measles, mumps and rubella, tuberculosis screening, and hepatitis B for clinical roles. You may also be asked to complete information governance and confidentiality training before you are allowed near patient records.

In Construction, you will often need a CSCS card, which involves passing the CITB health, safety and environment test, plus a site-specific induction. In Catering and Hospitality, a Level 2 food hygiene certificate is commonly expected. In Hair and Beauty, you may need to demonstrate knowledge of COSHH and skin testing procedures. Check with your employer which of these apply to you and who pays for them.
