📚 What the QS EMBA Rankings Actually Measure | QS
Every year the QS Executive MBA rankings produce a familiar wave of headlines, yet the number printed beside each school is not a measure of teaching quality or graduate happiness. It is a composite score assembled from perception surveys, data submitted by the schools themselves, alumni questionnaires and citation analysis. Knowing exactly which inputs go in – and which stay out – is the first step towards reading an EMBA ranking honestly rather than emotionally.
1. What the QS EMBA Rankings Are | QS EMBA
QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) is a UK-based higher-education data company best known for the QS World University Rankings. Within its business-school portfolio, the MBA rankings and the Executive MBA rankings are produced separately, because the two degrees serve fundamentally different student populations and therefore cannot be judged on the same criteria.
QS(Quacquarelli Symonds)是一家总部位于英国的高等教育数据机构,以 QS 世界大学排名最为人熟知。
An EMBA is a part-time, senior-level degree. Typical entrants are in their mid-thirties to their forties, arrive with ten to fifteen years of professional experience, and usually remain in full-time employment while studying. A ranking built for this group therefore rewards programmes that can attract and retain senior cohorts, not programmes that recruit the youngest or the cheapest students.
The published output is not a mark out of 100 but a composite score converted into an ordinal position. A rank of 20th means that nineteen ranked programmes scored higher in that year’s calculation. It says nothing about the absolute standard of the twentieth programme, and nothing about how it compares with a school that did not enter.
2. Who Is Eligible to Be Ranked |
Participation in the QS EMBA rankings is voluntary. A business school must choose to submit data, and it must meet the eligibility conditions set out in the current methodology before it appears in the table at all.
In broad terms, eligibility requires a degree-granting executive MBA programme with a minimum cohort size, a sufficient number of graduates available for alumni surveying, and recognised institutional standing. Programmes that are too small, too new, or that lack graduating cohorts cannot generate the data the methodology needs.
Non-degree executive education is excluded. Open-enrolment short courses, custom corporate programmes and executive certificates are valuable products, but they are not EMBA degrees and therefore do not enter this ranking.
A crucial practical consequence follows from voluntary participation: a school missing from the table is not necessarily a weak school. It may simply have declined to submit data, or failed a technical threshold. Absence is not evidence of poor quality.
3. Survey Inputs: Employer and Academic Reputation |
Employer reputation is generated from the QS Employer Survey, in which recruiters and hiring managers around the world are asked which business schools they believe produce the strongest graduates. It is a perception measure, and it carries substantial weight in the composite because employers are the ultimate consumers of the degree.
Academic reputation is generated from the QS Academic Survey, which polls academics working in business and management disciplines. Respondents are asked to name the institutions they regard as strongest in their field. Again, it measures reputation rather than verified performance.
Because both indicators are perception-based, they behave like a stock of accumulated brand capital. They move slowly. A school that genuinely improves its programme this year may still take five to ten years to shift its reputation sub-score in a measurable way.
Two technical caveats matter for interpretation. First, response volume and the geographic distribution of respondents affect the outcome; a survey skewed towards one region will favour schools in that region. Second, the surveys ask about schools, not about specific EMBA cohorts, so the reputation of the parent institution partly carries the EMBA programme.
4. Executive Profile and Seniority |
The executive profile indicator describes who actually sits in the classroom. It typically draws on the average number of years of full-time work experience in the cohort, the proportion of students holding managerial or senior management positions, and sometimes the average age of enrolled students.
Seniority is measured by job level rather than job title alone. A cohort in which a large share of students already hold director, partner or C-suite positions scores better than a cohort composed mainly of early managers, even if the two groups have similar total years of experience.
The logic behind the weighting is educational rather than prestige-driven. In an EMBA, a large part of the learning happens horizontally, through the exchange of real managerial problems and solutions among peers. A more experienced and more senior cohort produces a richer discussion, which is precisely what EMBA tuition is buying.
For applicants, this indicator is a useful early filter. If a programme’s executive profile sits far below your own experience level, you may find the peer group underwhelming. If it sits far above, you may struggle to contribute and to be heard.
5. Career Outcomes and Salary |
Salary indicators compare alumni earnings before and after the programme, usually converted into a common currency and adjusted for purchasing power so that cohorts in different economies can be compared fairly. The key output is the percentage uplift, not the absolute figure alone.
Career progression indicators look beyond pay. They may capture promotion rates, changes in job level, movement into general management from a functional specialism, and sector switching. These capture the kinds of advancement that a senior manager typically pursues.
Data for these indicators come largely from alumni questionnaires. That creates three well-known weaknesses. Response rates can be low and self-selecting; successful alumni are more likely to reply. Salaries are self-reported and rarely audited. And currency movements between reporting years can distort year-on-year comparisons.
Read salary data as a directional signal, not as a promise. A large reported uplift means the school’s alumni community, on average and among those who answered, moved up substantially. It does not mean any individual applicant will obtain the same increase.
6. Diversity and Class Composition |
Diversity indicators usually cover gender balance, the proportion of international students or the number of nationalities represented, and increasingly the mix of industries and functional backgrounds within the cohort.
The rationale is again pedagogical. A class drawn entirely from one sector, one function and one country will tend to converge on a single set of assumptions. A genuinely mixed class forces students to defend their reasoning against different regulatory, cultural and commercial contexts.
Diversity is also the indicator most easily gamed, and applicants should read it critically. A programme can report a high international percentage simply because it recruits heavily from one neighbouring country, and a strong gender ratio at entry may not survive into senior leadership roles afterwards.
7. Faculty and Thought Leadership |
Thought leadership indicators draw on research output in business and management fields – typically publications and citation counts drawn from bibliometric databases. The more frequently a school’s faculty are cited by other researchers, the stronger this sub-score becomes.
Some methodologies also consider the proportion of faculty holding doctoral qualifications, the presence of practitioner-teachers with substantial industry experience, and executive education activity such as published case studies or industry reports.
Here the interpretive trap is obvious. Research citation counts measure scholarly influence on other scholars. They do not measure whether a professor can hold a room of forty experienced managers and change how those managers think. A research-heavy faculty and a teaching-effective faculty overlap, but they are not the same set.
8. The Composite Score: Normalisation and Weighting |
Indicators arrive in incompatible units – percentages, years, citation counts, survey scores. Before they can be combined, each is standardised, most commonly by converting it into a z-score that expresses how far a school sits from the average of the ranked group, in units of standard deviation.
z = (x − μ) ÷ σ
where x is the school’s raw value, μ is the mean of the ranked group and σ is the standard deviation of that group. Standardisation means a score has no meaning on its own – only relative to the other schools measured in the same year.
Composite Score = Σ (wᵢ × zᵢ)
where wᵢ is the published weight for indicator i and zᵢ is that indicator’s standardised value. The weighted sum is then sorted to produce the rank order. Change any weight and the rank order changes, which is why methodology revisions occasionally reshuffle the table without any school changing its actual performance.
| Indicator family | What it captures | Indicative weight band |
| Employer reputation | Recruiter perception of graduate quality | High (roughly a quarter to a third) |
| Academic reputation | Scholar perception of the institution | High (roughly a fifth to a third) |
| Executive profile | Experience, seniority and age of the cohort | Medium to high |
