📚 IGCSE Economics: Common Misconceptions | IGCSE
IGCSE Economics is full of concepts that sound similar but carry very different meanings. Students frequently lose marks not because they lack understanding, but because they mix up closely related terms, muddle cause and effect, or apply the right idea in the wrong context. This article unpacks ten of the most persistent misconceptions, clarifies the correct economic reasoning for each, and shows how to avoid these traps in exam answers.
1. Confusing Demand with Quantity Demanded |
The single most common error in IGCSE Economics is treating a change in quantity demanded as if it were a change in demand. A change in the good’s own price causes a movement along the demand curve — this is a change in quantity demanded. A shift of the whole demand curve occurs only when a non-price determinant of demand (income, tastes, prices of substitutes or complements, population, advertising, etc.) alters consumers’ willingness and ability to buy at every price level.
- Movement along the demand curve: only the good’s own price changes → change in quantity demanded.
- Shift of the demand curve: a non-price factor changes → change in demand.
Many students write “demand increases” when a price falls, but the correct phrasing is “quantity demanded increases”. Examiners penalise this sloppiness because it reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of how market forces operate.
2. Confusing Supply with Quantity Supplied |
The supply-side twin of the above mistake is equally widespread. A rise in the product’s own price leads to an expansion in quantity supplied (a movement up the supply curve), not an increase in supply. Supply itself only changes when the whole supply curve shifts, triggered by factors such as production costs, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies, number of sellers, or weather conditions for agricultural goods.
- Higher price → greater quantity supplied (expansion); lower price → smaller quantity supplied (contraction).
- Improved technology → supply increases (curve shifts right); higher input costs → supply decreases (curve shifts left).
Using “supply” when you mean “quantity supplied” suggests that a reduction in price could reduce supply, which is logically impossible because price is on the vertical axis; it changes quantity supplied, not the supply curve itself.
3. Misreading the Production Possibility Curve (PPC) |
A PPC shows the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce with given resources and technology. Students often confuse a movement from inside the curve to a point on the curve — which represents the elimination of unemployment or inefficiency — with an outward shift of the whole PPC, which represents actual economic growth. The former requires using idle resources; the latter requires an increase in the quantity or quality of resources or technological progress.
- Point inside PPC: unemployed resources or inefficient allocation → can move to the curve without growth.
- Outward shift of PPC: more or better resources, improved technology → economic growth.
Another nuance: moving along the PPC shows opportunity cost, because producing more of one good requires sacrificing some of the other. A shift outward reduces that sacrifice, but only the shift signals growth.
4. Mixing Up Nominal and Real GDP | 混淆名义 GDP 和实际 GDP
Nominal GDP is the total value of output measured at current prices, without adjusting for inflation. Real GDP strips out the effect of price changes so that the figure reflects genuine changes in the volume of goods and services produced. A country can report rising nominal GDP simply because the average price level rose, not because the economy actually produced more.
| Nominal GDP | Current prices, includes inflation. |
| Real GDP | Constant base-year prices, reflects quantity changes only. |
This distinction matters hugely when discussing living standards. Real GDP per head is the appropriate measure; nominal GDP per head gives a distorted picture if prices have changed significantly.
5. Blurring the Boundaries Between Demand-Side and Supply-Side Policies |
Demand-side policies (monetary and fiscal) aim to shift aggregate demand (AD) and are typically used to manage the business cycle — stimulating demand during a recession or cooling it during a boom. Supply-side policies, by contrast, seek to increase the productive potential of the economy, shifting the long-run aggregate supply (LRAS) curve to the right by improving productivity, competitiveness, and efficiency.
- Monetary policy: interest rates, money supply → affect AD.
- Fiscal policy: government spending, taxation → affect AD.
- Supply-side policies: education/training, tax reforms, deregulation, infrastructure → affect LRAS.
A common exam trap: stating that cutting income tax is solely a demand-side stimulus. It can also be a supply-side measure if it incentivises work, enterprise, and investment, thereby shifting LRAS.
6. Overgeneralising the Law of Demand |
The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls. However, two theoretical exceptions exist. Giffen goods are inferior staples for which the income effect of a price change is so strong that a price rise increases quantity demanded because consumers must abandon more expensive alternatives and buy even more of the inferior good. Veblen goods are status symbols for which a higher price actually makes them more desirable because the price signals exclusivity.
While rarely tested in depth at IGCSE, claiming “demand always obeys the law” without qualification can miss marks on higher-level analysis questions. Recognising these exceptions demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of consumer behaviour.
7. Muddling Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) with Income Elasticity of Demand (YED) |
PED measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in the good’s own price. YED measures how sensitive demand is to a change in consumers’ income. They answer completely different exam questions; yet students often quote a PED formula when asked about the impact of a recession on a luxury brand.
PED = %ΔQd / %ΔPrice | YED = %ΔQd / %ΔIncome
PED = %Δ 需求量 / %Δ 价格 | YED = %Δ 需求量 / %Δ 收入
- PED > 1: price elastic; PED < 1: price inelastic.
- YED > 0: normal good; YED < 0: inferior good; YED > 1: luxury good.
Always match the elasticity measure to the trigger variable. If the trigger is income, you need YED. If the trigger is the product’s own price, PED applies. Mixing them leads to irrelevant analysis and lost marks.
8. Misapplying Cost Concepts in the Short Run and Long Run |
Fixed costs do not vary with output in the short run (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable costs change directly with output (e.g. raw materials, piece-rate wages). The confusion arises when students treat all costs as variable. In the long run, all costs become variable because firms can adjust every input; there is no such thing as a fixed cost in the long run.
| Short run | At least one factor of production is fixed → fixed costs exist. |
| Long run | All factors variable → no fixed costs, all costs are variable. |
Also, average fixed cost (AFC) falls continuously as output rises, because the fixed total is spread over more units. Learners often mistakenly think AFC rises at high output levels, confusing it with the typical U-shape of average total cost.
9. Getting Comparative and Absolute Advantage the Wrong Way Round |
Absolute advantage is about who can produce a good using fewer resources (or more output per unit of input). Comparative advantage is about who can produce a good at a lower opportunity cost. The two can, and often do, diverge. A country can have an absolute disadvantage in all goods yet still benefit from specialisation and trade by focusing on the good where its opportunity cost is comparatively lower.
- Absolute advantage: fewer input units needed, or more output per input unit.
- Comparative advantage: lower opportunity cost in producing a good.
Calculations in exams require identifying opportunity cost ratios. A common slip is comparing output per hour without converting into opportunity costs, which leads students to recommend the wrong specialisation.
10. Conflating Private Costs, Social Costs, and Externalities |
Private costs are faced directly by the producer or consumer. External costs are borne by third parties not involved in the transaction. Social cost = private cost + external cost. Many students assume that any negative effect is a negative externality, but a negative externality exists only when the social cost of an activity exceeds the private cost and the market fails to register the spillover effect. Simply polluting is not automatically an externality in the strict economic sense unless it is unpriced and affects third parties.
- Private cost + external cost = social cost.
- Merit goods: social benefits > private benefits → under-consumed in free market.
- Demerit goods: social costs > private costs → over-consumed in free market.
The key is the divergence between private and social valuations. Without a wedge between the two, there is no market failure caused by externalities.
