📚 IGCSE Edexcel Economics: Concept Distinctions | IGCSE Edexcel

Economics is full of terms that sound similar yet carry very different meanings. Confusing them can lead to lost marks in exams even when the underlying reasoning is sound. This article clarifies the most commonly misunderstood pairs in the IGCSE Edexcel syllabus, from demand vs quantity demanded to GDP vs GNP. Understanding these distinctions will strengthen your analysis and help you write precise, high-scoring answers.

1. Demand vs Quantity Demanded |

Demand is the willingness and ability of consumers to purchase a good or service at a range of prices over a given period, represented by the entire demand curve.

Quantity demanded refers to the specific amount consumers are willing and able to buy at one particular price, shown as a point on the demand curve.

A change in the good’s own price causes a movement along the demand curve – a change in quantity demanded. A shift of the entire demand curve – a change in demand – is caused by non-price factors such as income, tastes, or the prices of substitutes and complements.

Example: A fall in the price of oranges increases the quantity demanded (movement down the curve), whereas a rise in consumers’ health awareness shifts the entire demand curve for oranges to the right at every price.

2. Supply vs Quantity Supplied |

Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices over a period, represented by the entire supply curve.

Quantity supplied is the specific amount producers are willing to sell at a particular price, shown as a single point on the supply curve.

Similar to demand, a change in the product’s own price leads to a movement along the supply curve (change in quantity supplied), while changes in costs of production, technology, taxes, subsidies, or the number of sellers shift the entire supply curve (change in supply).

Example: A rise in the price of wheat increases the quantity supplied (movement up the curve). An improvement in farming technology reduces production costs and shifts the wheat supply curve to the right.

3. Movements along vs Shifts of the Demand/Supply Curve |

This section reinforces the previous two distinctions by summarising the underlying principle: ‘Movements along’ occur exclusively in response to a change in the price of the good itself, shown along the existing curve.

‘Shifts’ of the curve refer to a new position of the entire curve at every price level, caused by factors other than the product’s own price – for demand, these are remembered by the acronym PASIFIC (Population, Advertising, Substitutes, Income, Fashion/tastes, Interest rates, Complements). For supply, factors include costs, technology, taxes, subsidies, and the number of firms.

Confusion often arises in exam questions which ask whether an event changes demand or quantity demanded. Always ask: ‘Is the change coming from the good’s own price, or from something else?’ This simple question separates the two concepts immediately.

4. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) vs Price Elasticity of Supply (PES) |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in the good’s own price, calculated as: % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in price. It is nearly always negative due to the law of demand, but the sign is often ignored; we focus on the absolute value.

Price elasticity of supply (PES) measures the responsiveness of quantity supplied to a change in price: % change in quantity supplied ÷ % change in price. PES is positive because price and quantity supplied move in the same direction.

Key distinction: PED is determined by factors such as availability of substitutes, degree of necessity, proportion of income spent, and time. PES depends on the production period, spare capacity, perishability, and ease of entry into the market.

A commodity with elastic PED (|PED| > 1) sees a larger proportionate change in quantity demanded than the price change, whereas a good with elastic PES (PES > 1) sees a larger proportionate change in quantity supplied than the price change. Inelastic PED or PES (|PED| or PES < 1) means the opposite.

5. Income Elasticity of Demand (YED) vs Cross Elasticity of Demand (XED) |

Income elasticity of demand (YED) measures how much quantity demanded changes in response to a change in consumer income: % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in income. YED classifies goods as normal (YED positive) or inferior (YED negative).

Cross elasticity of demand (XED) measures the responsiveness of demand for one good (A) when the price of another good (B) changes: % change in quantity demanded of A ÷ % change in price of B. If XED is positive, the goods are substitutes; if negative, they are complements.

YED and XED are used for different purposes. YED helps firms forecast sales when the economy is growing or shrinking, and it influences how a business produces normal vs inferior goods. XED helps firms understand relationships between their products and competitors’ products, and can inform pricing strategies.

6. Consumer Surplus vs Producer Surplus |

Consumer surplus is the difference between the maximum price consumers are willing to pay and the market price they actually pay. It is the area below the demand curve and above the market price.

Producer surplus is the difference between the market price firms receive and the minimum price they are willing to accept (the supply curve). It is the area above the supply curve and below the market price.

The two surpluses together measure total welfare in a market. Changes in market conditions – such as shifts in demand or supply, or government intervention – redistribute surplus between consumers and producers. A price ceiling, for example, reduces producer surplus and may create a shortage, while consumer surplus can rise or fall depending on how much the price is lowered and whether output falls.

7. Market Equilibrium vs Disequilibrium |

Market equilibrium occurs at the price where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. At this price, there is no inherent tendency for change – the plans of buyers and sellers match.

Disequilibrium refers to any situation where quantity demanded does not equal quantity supplied at the current price. It can take the form of excess demand (shortage) when the price is below equilibrium, or excess supply (surplus) when the price is above equilibrium.

In a free market, disequilibrium is usually temporary: shortages push prices up, surpluses push prices down, moving the market back toward equilibrium. However, government interventions such as price floors and ceilings can create persistent disequilibria.

8. Direct Tax vs Indirect Tax |

A direct tax is levied on the income or wealth of individuals and firms, and the burden cannot be shifted to others. Examples include income tax and corporation tax.

An indirect tax is imposed on spending on goods and services, and can be partly or wholly passed on to consumers through higher prices. Value Added Tax (VAT) and excise duties are common examples.

The economic effects differ. Direct taxes reduce disposable income and can affect incentives to work and invest. Indirect taxes raise production costs, shift the supply curve leftward, reduce quantity traded, and can be used to correct negative externalities (e.g., sugar taxes or carbon taxes).

9. Fiscal Policy vs Monetary Policy |

Fiscal policy involves the use of government spending and taxation to influence the economy. It is conducted by the government and is aimed at objectives such as economic growth, full employment, and price stability.

Monetary policy involves managing interest rates, the money supply, and exchange rates, and is typically carried out by a central bank (like the Bank of England). Its main goal is to control inflation and support macroeconomic stability.

Expansionary fiscal policy (higher spending or lower taxes) can boost aggregate demand, while contractionary fiscal policy can cool an overheating economy. Expansionary monetary policy (lower interest rates) encourages borrowing and spending; contractionary policy raises rates to reduce inflationary pressure.

10. GDP vs GNP |

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a given period, regardless of who owns the productive assets.

Gross National Product (GNP) measures the total value of goods and services produced by a country’s residents and businesses, whether located domestically or abroad. GNP = GDP + net factor income from abroad (income earned by citizens abroad minus income earned by foreigners within the country).

For a country with many multinational corporations sending profits home, GDP may be larger than GNP; for a country with large overseas investments and remittances, GNP may exceed GDP. The distinction matters when analysing the economic well-being of a nation’s citizens versus the level of economic activity within its borders.

11. Inflation vs Deflation |

Inflation is a sustained increase in the general price level over time, reducing the purchasing power of money. It is typically measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). A low and stable rate (around 2%) is a common policy target.

Deflation is a sustained decrease in the general price level. While falling prices may seem beneficial, deflation can be harmful: consumers delay purchases expecting further falls, demand drops, firms cut output and lay off workers, leading to a vicious spiral of falling prices and rising unemployment.

Disinflation is sometimes confused with deflation, but it simply means a slowing of the rate of inflation – prices are still rising, but at a slower pace. This is distinct from deflation where prices are actually falling.

12. Cost-push vs Demand-pull Inflation |

Demand-pull inflation occurs when aggregate demand increases faster than aggregate supply, pulling the price level up. This can happen during a boom when consumer confidence, investment, and exports are strong.

Cost-push inflation occurs when the cost of production rises, prompting firms to raise prices to protect profit margins. Common triggers include rising wages, raw material prices (e.g., oil), or increases in indirect taxes.

The distinction is crucial for policy responses: demand-pull inflation may be tackled with contractionary monetary or fiscal policy to cool aggregate demand. Cost-push inflation is more difficult, as reducing demand may worsen unemployment without addressing the supply-side root cause; supply-side policies (improving productivity, lowering business costs) are often needed.
